Bengal BJP MP Says TMC ‘Sabotaging’ his Bhawanipur Poll Campaign

Less than a week after miscreants hurled bombs at BJP MP Arjun Singh’s residence in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, similar explosions were reported outside his home on Tuesday morning. The BJP Lok Sabha MP from Barrackpore has accused the ruling TMC of sabotaging his campaign for the upcoming bypolls in West Benagl’s Bhawanipur and alleged that they are attacking his house with crude bombs and threatening his party workers.

Speaking to News18.com, he said, “I would like to thank the Union Home Ministry for handing over the bombing incident to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Tomorrow, the officers will come and I am sure those who masterminded the attack will have a difficult time.”

When asked whom he is suspecting, he said, “The first bombing incident which took place on September 8, was planned by the MLA Jagatdal and his name is Somenath Shyam. In the second attack, the CCTV footage was not very clear. I hope the NIA officers will hunt down the perpetrator.”

“The Trinamool Congress failed to win the confidence of people in Barrackpore and therefore they want to eliminate me because I am the biggest hurdle before them in this political war. Also, they want me to stay away from Bhawanipur and therefore they are trying to scare me with such an incident. I would like to tell them that I will never bow down before the TMC goons and will continue to fight against them,” he added.

On Tuesday, an incident of bombing took place outside Arjun Singh’s house around 9 am. It happened a day after the Union Home Ministry ordered for a NIA probe into the attack of bombing incident which took place on September 8.

Then, three bombs were hurled at the gate of his home at Bhatpara and luckily no one has been injured in the incident. At the time of attack the MP was in Delhi to meet central party leaders to discuss by-polls in the State.

Commenting on Arjun Singh’s allegations, Trinamool MLA Partha Bhowmik has claimed that the BJP MP himself staged the attack to create media hype.

Shamita Shetty enquires about Raj Kundra’s bail from mom Sunanda during Bigg Boss OTT family task

In the last episode of Bigg Boss OTT, Shamita Shetty’s mother Sunanda Shetty entered the house to motivate her daughter. During which, Shamita enquired about sister Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra, who was arrested by the Mumbai police for allegedly creating and publishing pornographic content. He was arrested by police on July 19 along with 11 other people. Amid this, Shilpa’s sister entered the Bigg Boss OTT house and has emerged as a strong contender in the controversial reality show.

Now, Shamita asked her mother about Shilpa and Raj Kundra, To which Sunanda replied “Shilpa is good, everyone is ok. She misses you a lot and we all are proud of you. She gets her daily updates from me when she is busy with her life. Just be happy and be who you are. Your instincts are so good. We missed a lot and I am not crying. You have to be stronger. I’ve seen you as a simple girl in the house, there was no airs about you. I am strong, you are strong and we have three strong women in our house.”

Encouraging Shamita after she said that housemates call her ‘Bossy’, her mom responded “Bossy from which angle, you have not come with golden horns on your head. You came in as a simple girl just as other participants. People are intimidated and you are a normal simple girl in the house. You don’t need to change yourself for others. I know who you are, let me tell you what the world thinks, you are, they think you are a queen as you are residing in their hearts.”

Meanwhile, on August 2, Shilpa issued a statement over Raj Kundra’s arrest stating that the case is sub judice and attributing false quotes on her behalf should be stopped. She had posted a statement on Twitter. “Yes! The past few days have been challenging, on every front. There have been a lot of rumours and accusations. A lot of unwarranted aspersions on me cast by the media and (not so) well-wishers as well. A lot of trolling/questions posed… not only to me but also to my family.”

Kannada Activists Protest Hindi Diwas in Karnataka

Several Kannada activists across the state protested against the Hindi Diwas observed on Tuesday. The protests included picketing banks demanding to “stop Hindi imposition” and the services be provided in regional language.

“The protests were held in around 1,500 spots across the State. It is a long-time demand that services be offered in the regional language, especially in banks. The issue goes beyond banks but we are beginning with banks because that’s a concern that most people can understand,” said Kannada activist Arun Javagal.

Members of the Kannada Rakshana Vedike, a pro-Kannada organisation, held protests in different districts holding placards, raising slogans against “Hindi imposition”.

The protest is scheduled to go on for a week where the activists would also meet MLAs and MPs submitting representations and requesting them to take up the issue for discussion in Parliament and Assembly.

“We have already met a few and over the next one week we hope to meet many more to take this issue up seriously,” said Javagal.

The protest was also held on social media with #StopHindiImposition.

“Our campaign #StopHindiImposition is not a campaign against Hindi as a language or Hindi speaking people but against the Hindi imposition policies of the Government of India,” tweeted Ganesh Chetan, a language rights activist based in Bengaluru.

Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy also took to Twitter to raise objections over-celebrating Hindi divas.

“Kannada is the priority on our land. It is unnecessary to celebrate Hindi Divas. Let Hindi imposition not ruin the peace of multilingual India,” Kumaraswamy tweeted.

Tripura Rally: Bengal BJP Slams TMC ‘Double Standards’ on Holding Political Events Amid Pandemic

The Tripura police on Monday denied permission to the TMC for holding a rally in Agartala on September 15 and 16.

  • FOLLOW US ON:

The BJP on Tuesday accused the Trinamool Congress of practising double standards in following the Disaster Management Act, claiming that the Mamata Banerjee-led party is not allowing the opposition to hold political programmes citing Covid related restrictions in West Bengal but seeks to conduct a rally in Tripura. The Tripura police on Monday denied permission to the TMC for holding a rally in Agartala on September 15 and 16.

The TMC, however, claimed that the saffron party has no moral right to talk about conducting political programmes in Covid time as it did not ask the Election Commission (EC) to club the last phases of the assembly election in April when there was a surge in coronavirus cases in the state. “Despite following Covid-19 protocols, our numerous programmes in recent times were stopped by the police. They cite the Disaster Management Act to thwart the activities of the opposition. How can the same Trinamool vows to take out a rally in Tripura in violation of the Covid restrictions imposed by the administration?” West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said. After permission was sought to conduct a rally on September 15 in Agartala, the sub-divisional police officer (sadar) of West Tripura district told the TMC in a letter on Monday that it cannot be given as there is a scheduled programme of another political party. In another letter issued also on Monday, the same officer said permission cannot be granted to hold the programme on September 16 “since there will be law & order commitment of Police in view of Viswakarma Puja” on Friday.

Ghosh also charged the TMC with making sustained efforts to disrupt the “peaceful situation” in Tripura. Senior TMC leaders of West Bengal are visiting the North-eastern state to build an organisational base in the run-up to the 2023 assembly election.

Reacting to Ghosh’s comment, senior TMC leader West Bengal Transport minister Firhad Hakim claimed that the BJP has lost the moral right to talk about the appropriateness of holding political programmes in Covid time. “When there was a sharp spike in Covid cases in April, the BJP did not ask the EC to club the last phases of assembly polls and showed scant regard for public health. It was only the Trinamool Congress that repeatedly flagged the issue then,” Hakim said. The TMC on Monday postponed its proposed rally led by its general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the Tripura capital, after the police denied permission for holding the programme on September 15 and 16, prompting the TMC leader to claim that the BJP is “scared to death” of the Mamata Banerjee-led party.

Low bounce, not-so-fast court surprises Indian Davis Cup team in Finland

The Indian tennis squad was in for a pleasant surprise when it found out that the indoor hard court for the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Finland was not as fast as it was expected and carries low bounce.

The Indian players on Tuesday got a chance to practice on the match court, which has been laid temporarily on the carpet at an ice-hockey stadium here, and after the first hit, it turned out that it suits the visitors in a limited yet crucial way.

Non-playing captain Rohit Rajpal, before leaving for Finland, had said that they are expecting fast hard courts but realised that it’s not the case.

“What they have done is that they have pulled the ice out and put a wooden plank and laid the court over it, so the bounce is low that suits us but at the same time the slowness of the court does not suit us,” Rajpal told PTI.

“The Europeans mostly play on clay courts which are slower, so they like to rally a lot and that is their strength. Our Indian players do not do that but low bounce will certainly benefit us and our strategy will revolve around that,” he added.

Asked how the low-bounce court would suit Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran when they too have spent considerable time training and playing in Europe, Rajpal said because of their repertoire of shots.

“We can chip and charge, our players do that often. Both Ramkumar and Prajnesh hit flat and for that, the low bounce will be pretty helpful. You can’t do that on high bounce courts,” he explained.

The two-day tie begins Friday.

Finland have higher-ranked players in both singles and doubles but Rajpal, for whom it will be his third tie as captain, said the Indians are in with a chance.

Finland’s top-ranked player is Emil Ruusuvuori, who is placed 74 on the ATP list while India’s best-ranked player Prajnesh Gunneswaran (165) is not even inside top-150.

The left-handed Indian had recently lost to Ruusuvuori on the Tour.

“On paper they are a better ranked team than us but this is Davis Cup, I say it is 50-50. It depends on how things pan out on the first day as well. To have a 1-1 score on day one is important for us. The doubles is going to be a crucial match for both sides.”

“As the days go on and we get to see more of our players, our strategy will be clearer. The team is looking in good shape, the boys have been playing on the Tour so they are sharp.”

The players have entered the bio-bubble where they are restricted to their apartments, hotel and the venue.

The apartments are placed just outside the official hotel, where they go only for food which is served in a separate protected area.

The winner of the tie will qualify for the Qualifiers in 2022 while the losing teams will compete in the play-offs to retain their place in World Group I next year.
