Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday disbursed Rs 192.08 crore into the accounts of 80,032 handloom weavers under the YSR Nethanna Nestham scheme for the third consecutive year.

Speaking on this occasion, the Chief Minister said that he had kept his promise made to the handloom weavers during Praja Sankalpa Yatra after witnessing their hardships, by launching the YSR Nethanna Nestham scheme where Rs 24,000 will be credited directly into the bank accounts of the weavers having own looms every year.

Under the scheme, every beneficiary will receive a total aid of Rs 1.2 lakh for five years, which will benefit the weavers to overcome their financial problems, the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister stated that the government had spent Rs 576 crore towards weaver families in the last 26 months, providing Rs 72,000 to each family. He said the financial assistance to the handloom weavers is being provided most transparently without any corruption like nowhere else in the country.

Reddy added that the amount will not be adjusted to the old dues of the beneficiary to the bank, as the government had already spoken with banks in this regard.

The Chief Minister has said that those who are eligible and left out from the scheme can still apply at the village and ward secretariats within a month to avail the financial aid.

The CM said that apart from the financial assistance, the State government had also cleared the dues of the previous government to a tune of Rs 103 crore to APCO and other cooperative societies.

Besides these, in the times of the Covid pandemic, the State government had purchased cloth from APCO for making masks, and placed orders for school uniforms for the students, taking the total amount spent during the 26 months of governance to about Rs 1,600 crore.

Ministers Mekapati Gautam Reddy, Kurasala Kannababu, Ch Venugopalakrishna, Chief Secretary Adityanath Das, Industries and Commerce (Handloom, Textiles) Secretary Shashi Bhushan Kumar, MLC Potula Sunita, APCO Chairman Chillapalli Venkata Naga Mohanarao, Devanga Corporation Chairman Biraka Surendra, Padmashali Corporation Chairman J Vijayalakshmi, Thogataveera Corporation Chairman Geddam Sunitha, Kurnishali Corporation Chairman Butta Sharadamma, Lepakshi Chairman B Vijayalakshmi and others were present during the function.

The Punjab government has sought 25 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and anti-drone gadgets for the Border Security Force (BSF) for protection from Pakistan-backed terror forces in view of the repeated incursion of drones from across the border. The request was made by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh during his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday.

Citing the recent heavy influx of weapons, hand-grenades and IEDs into the State, with Pakistan’s ISI also raising the ante ahead of the Independence Day and in the run-up to the Punjab Assembly polls, the Chief Minister told Shah that the security situation was grave and needed the Centre’s immediate intervention.

The CAPF deployment is sought for Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali, Patiala, Bathinda, Phagwara and Moga, as well as anti-drone technology for the BSF deployed at the borders. He pointed to the potential threat to the security of vital installations and public events being attended by highly threatened individuals.

Citing inputs from central and State agencies, corroborated by disclosures made by arrested terrorists, the Chief Minister said potential individual and mass indiscriminate targets include trains, buses and Hindu temples, prominent Kisan leaders, RSS Shakhas/Offices, RSS/BJP/Shiv Sena leaders based in Punjab, Deras, Nirankari Bhawans and Samagams.

The Chief Minister apprised Shah about the recent efforts by Pakistan’s ISI and the country’s establishment to push large quantities of weapons, hand-grenades, RDX explosives, detonators, timer devices, sophisticated laboratory-made tiffin bombs into Punjab for carrying out terrorist acts. “With the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for February-March 2022, many militant and radical operatives are being pressurised by the ISI to carry out terrorist actions. These are very serious and worrisome developments having huge security implications for the border state and its people,” he warned.

He reminded the Home Minister about the earlier targeted killings masterminded by the ISI, including that of RSS/Shiv Sena/Dera leaders and RSS Shakhas, in 2016, ahead of the last Assembly polls. He further informed Shah that in the last 35 days, more than 17 deliveries of weapons, hand-grenades, explosives and assorted IED fabrication hardware had come to the notice of the Punjab Police and the central agencies, which meant that consignments of weapons/hand-grenades/IEDs were delivered to Punjab based terror operatives on every 2nd day in July with the trend continuing in August.

कैलकुलेटर बताता है कि यह अमेरिकी जनगणना ब्यूरो मेट्रोपॉलिटन सांख्यिकीय क्षेत्रों, या सीबीएसए का उपयोग करता है। उदाहरण के लिए, स्टैमफोर्ड, कनेक्टिकट, न्यूयॉर्क शहर के सीबीएसए में नहीं है, भले ही वहां रहने वाले कई लोग न्यूयॉर्क में काम करते हैं।

RBI decides to penalise banks, impose heft penalties from Oct 1 if…

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday said it has decided to penalise banks for failure to timely replenish currency notes in ATMs. The move comes amid worries of frequent non-availability of cash in ATMs. 

In a circular, the central bank said it will start imposing penalty on banks in case the ATMs remain out-of-cash for a total period of 10 hours in a month from October 1, 2021, onward.

“The Scheme of Penalty for non-replenishment of ATMs has been formulated to ensure that sufficient cash is available to the public through ATMs,” the RBI said. 

The central bank said it has a mandate to issue banknotes and the banks are fulfiling it by dispensing banknotes to the public through their wide network of branches and ATMs.

It said a review of downtime of ATMs due to cash-outs was undertaken and it was observed that ATM operations affected by cash-outs lead to non-availability of cash and cause avoidable inconvenience to the members of the public.

Therefore, it was decided that the banks/ White Label ATM Operators (WLAOs) will strengthen their systems/ mechanisms to monitor the availability of cash in ATMs and ensure timely replenishment to avoid cash-outs. 

“Any non-compliance in this regard shall be viewed seriously and shall attract monetary penalty as stipulated in the ‘Scheme of Penalty for non-replenishment of ATMs’,” the RBI said.

On condition for counting instances of cash-outs in an ATM, the RBI said it would come into play “when the customer is not able to withdraw cash due to non-availability of cash in a particular ATM”.

As regards the quantum of penalty, the central bank said “cash-out at any ATM of more than ten hours in a month” will attract a flat penalty of Rs 10,000 per ATM.

In the case of White Label ATMs (WLAs), the penalty would be charged to the bank, which is meeting the cash requirement of that particular WLA.

The bank, may, at its discretion, recover the penalty from the WLA operator, it added.

A historic Olympic medal, notwithstanding, the Indian men’s hockey team should try to emulate the benchmark set by Belgium and Australia if it wishes to reclaim the gold in three years time in 2024 Paris Games, said the side’s chief coach Graham Reid.

While Australia has been a hockey powerhouse after the 1980s, reigning Olympic and world champions Belgium took the game by storm in the last 10 years by finishing runners-up in 2016 Rio and then winning the gold in Tokyo Games.

Besides, Belgium also bagged the World Cup title in 2018 before claiming the European championship crown in 2019.

“They (Belgium and Australia) are two world-class teams we saw in the final (in Tokyo). I think they are the benchmark and that’s what we need to be aiming for,” Reid told reporters during an open media session.

“If you look at Belgium, it’s a pretty good mirror to what we should be aiming for.”

The Manpreet Singh-led Indian men’s hockey team scripted history in the just-concluded Tokyo Games by winning a medal, a bronze, after a hiatus of 41 years. India’s last of the eight Olympic gold medals came way back in 1980 Moscow Games.

Reid, a master tactician, said a strong bonding developed between the players during the COVID-19 forced lockdown was the key to success in Tokyo.

“If you go back 15 months, it was very tough for all of us because most of us haven’t seen our family for a long time. So it was great to go to Tokyo and finally being able to play. Competition before the Games was very limited and to play at the highest level, you need competition to keep improving and that was difficult,” he said.

“The group bonded well once we got there. I kept saying them don’t underestimate the affect of the last 15 months that can have on a team when you go through adversities together as a group and that helped in bonding and that’s what you saw in the bronze medal game.”

After a hard-fought 3-2 win over New Zealand in their opener, India were slammed 1-7 by eventual silver medallist Australia in their next match.

Despite the scoreline, Reid, a former Australian player-cum-coach, said the Indians actually had impressive statistics against the Kookaburras in that match.

“We look at the data behind the loss, the scoreline was 7-1 but we created a lot of opportunities in that game and we actually played better I feel.

“I showed the guys the numbers and told them look we are not far off, with Australia having one of those days. So, it was all about helping the team’s mentality to look to the next game,” he said.

Reid admitted that he desperately wanted India to finish on the podium in Tokyo after having failed to take Australia beyond the quarterfinals as a coach five years back in Rio.

“The Olympics gets in your blood but things didn’t get well in Rio for me. This is what happens in hockey quarterfinals in the Olympics, it claims a big scalp every time. This time was Holland and last time was Australia. So you also need a little bit of fortune,” he said.

The coach lavished praise on young striker Simranjeet Singh, who scored a vital brace in the bronze medal match against Germany, saying India were fortunate to avail his services after being not picked in the initial 16-member squad.

Simranjeet got a lucky break to be a part of the Olympic-bound squad after the International Olympic Committee allowed three reserve players to be part of the contingent in team competitions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“That’s the quality of players we have in the group. It’s about one person being able to stand up at a different time when someone else doesn’t. We were fortunate (to have Simranjeet) but so were other teams as well. I think the rule change worked out very well,” Reid said.

The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, along with the followers of ‘Sanatan dharma’ has urged West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to ‘persuade’ the ruling government to change ‘Khela Hobe Dibas’ celebration scheduled on August 16 because on this day the ‘Great Calcutta Killings’ happened, which as per them is against the sentiments of Bengalis.

In the afternoon, Adhikari along with the monks went to the Raj Bhawan and requested the Governor to initiate a talk with the State government to reschedule the date of the ‘Khela Hobe Dibas’ celebration.

“16th August is a blot on Bengal’s history. The day is horrifically remembered as Direct Action Day or ‘Great Calcutta Killings’ which led to the brutal killings of thousands of Bengalis. Many dead bodies kept lying on the road for days to be fed by dogs & vultures even,” Adhikari tweeted.

He further wrote, “Accompanied by revered monks, pleaded the Honourable Governor Shri @jdhankhar1 ji to persuade the WB Govt to change the day of the proposed Khela Hobe divas, as any celebration on this day would only make the Bengalis relieve the pain of the gory past.”

Hours after the Governor also tweeted, which said, “Representatives of Sanatan organisations called on Governor WB today to seek change in the date of “Khela Hobe Divas” as it reminds the horrendous memories of Direct Action Day and ‘the week of long knives’ in 1946 that led to killings of thousands.”

“Their only objection was to the date of “Khela Hobe Divas” and sought intervention to convey their feelings to the government. The Governor assured them that their feelings would be conveyed to the government,” Governor’s tweet reads.

The ‘Great Calcutta Killings’ was a widespread communal riot and manslaughter between Hindus and Muslims that happened in Calcutta under the province of British India on August 16, 1946. The killings took place following the announcement of the Direct Action Day, also known as the Great Calcutta Killings, protest by Muslim League leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Then Jinnah protested after his proposal for a separate homeland for Muslims was rejected.

Then, Jinnah felt that if the British just pulled out, Muslims would suffer due to the large Hindu majority, which resulted in the worst communal riots that British India had seen. The riots claimed more than 5,500 lives and displaced thousands in a few days.

Speaking to News18.com, TMC MLA Tapas Roy, said, “We all know that August 16 is known as Football Lovers’ Day. It has nothing to do with Calcutta Killings. I don’t know why BJP is intentionally trying to create controversy over it. Also, the Governor has nothing to do with this matter.”

PM Modi’s app seeks people’s feedback on various issues in five poll-bound states

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s app has launched a survey in five poll-bound states seeking people’s opinion on a number of issues that are likely to influence their choice of the party or candidates.

The survey, open to people from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur and Punjab, seeks opinion on the voter’s most pressing consideration, rating of the state government on a number of metrics, view on any probable opposition unity in their constituency and take on the local MLA besides other matters.

The prime minister had undertaken similar surveys on the NaMo app on demonetisation after his government invalidated Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bills and prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and is known for the importance he attaches to the use of digital mediums to elicit people’s feedback.

The options the survey offers to people to a question asking them about their most important considerations for voting in the assembly polls include the government’s handling of COVID-19, price rise, corruption, employment, education, and law and order situation.

It also lists the options of “PM Modi”s leadership in the country”, “state level issues” and “local issues” to the question “which of these is a bigger factor for you while voting?”

“The survey allows people to give their feedback directly to the prime minister on a large number of issues,” an official source said.

The survey asks voters to write about the state government scheme which has benefitted them the most and seeks their take on a number of statements, including if same party governments at the Centre and in state help in development.

With the COVID-19 vaccination going on across the country, it seeks voters” view about its coverage in their state. It also asks people to name the three most popular BJP leaders in their state.

One question gives the options of a candidate’s caste, religion, and development record and asks people which of these is their most important consideration while voting.

The states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur and Punjab will be facing the assembly polls early next year. The BJP is in power in four of these five states.
