ODI World Cup 2023 squad will be in and around the one picked for Asia Cup: Ajit Agarkar

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has claimed that the core squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 will be in and around the one named for the Asia Cup on Monday, August 21.

India announced a strong side for the upcoming tournament with KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah returning to the side. After his brilliant run in the West Indies, Tilak varma was included as a part of the squad for the Asia Cup, while Suryakumar Yadav was given another chance by the team management.

Yuzvendra Chahal wasn’t part of the squad as Kuldeep Yadav was the only wrist spinner in the side. Hardik Pandya was retained as the vice-captain with the pace attack containing the likes of Mohammed Shami, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj to support Bumrah.

Speaking at the press conference, Agarkar said that the World Cup squad will be in and around the 18 players picked for the Asia Cup. The chief selector is also hoping that the likes of Iyer, Rahul, returning from injury, will be able to do well.

Agarkar said that they would announce the World Cup squad after a short camp and a few games.

“I mean, it’s really a no-brainer. We picked these 18 guys, so it’ll be in and around those guys. Few important guys are coming back from injury. Hopefully, all goes well with them. They’ve got a few games now in the Asia Cup, so yeah, it’ll be close between these guys. But fortunately we have some more time. Fifth is the deadline, and we’ll get to look at the players as a short camp, followed by a couple of games before we announce the actual squad. But, uh, yeah, it will obviously be around these guys on it,” said Agarkar.

India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2023 is as follows:

Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (vc), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.
