Sonia Gandhi took over the command of the Congress in July 2019 after son Rahul decided to step down following the party humiliating loss in the Lok Sabha polls under his leadership.

Sonia Gandhi is likely to step down as interim Congress president and is likely to be replace by veteran party leader Kamal Nath, sources within the party said. Kamal Nath, 74, met both Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday triggering talks of leadership change in the grand old party.

According to sources, the Congress is working on a plan to overhaul the party which may see heads of several state units be replaced. A session of All India Congress Committee (AICC) may be convened in August.

Sonia Gandhi took over the command of the Congress in July 2019 after son Rahul decided to step down following the party humiliating loss in the Lok Sabha polls under his leadership. With Sonia Gandhi’s health limiting her involvement in party’s activities, demands have been raised from within the organisation for a full-time president.

The G-23 (Group 23) of veteran leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Shashi Tharoor, Kapil Sibal and Manish Tewari have put forth their view of a change in leadership on a multiple occasions.

Kamal Nath – Congress veteran, Gandhis’ confidante

Kamal Nath is considered to be a confidante of the Congress first family. He is said to have a stronghold inside the organisation and greater acceptability among the top leaders. In 2002, he was appointed as the general secretary of the Congress party. This was when Sonia Gandhi was still emerging as a leader and was faced with the challenge to defeat Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led BJP in the subsequent Lok Sabha polls. He is also considered a favourite of Rahul who served as the president of the Congress from December 2017 to July 2019.

A 9-time Parliamentarian from Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara, Nath was considered a Delhi politician who spent most of his life in the national capital. But he was appointed as the chief of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee in 2018 and sent to his home state to lead the party in assembly elections. He assumed the office of Chief Minister on December 17, 2018 and resigned on March 20, 2020 after he failed to safeguard his government following a rebellion by Jyotiraditya Scindia who defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 22 MLAs.

Another good news for pensioners! Here’s a big update

The Centre has allowed banks to use social media apps such as WhatsApp alongside SMS and email to send pension slips to pensioners after their account is credited, an official order said Thursday. The decision was taken in order to “ensure ease of living” of the pensioners.

“Banks may also use social media apps WhatsApp etc in addition to sms and email,” the order issued by the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare read.

It said that a meeting was held with the Central Pension Processing Centres (CPPCs) of pension-disbursing banks last month wherein the issue of providing the breakup of the monthly pension to the pensioners was discussed.

Further, the order said that banks were impressed upon to undertake this welfare measure as this information is required by pensioners in connection with Income Tax, Dearness Relief payments and DR arrears among others.

The banks welcomed the idea and expressed their willingness to provide the information, it said.

“Accordingly, all pension disbursing banks should issue pension slip to pensioners after credit of pension on their registered mobile numbers through sms and email (wherever available) also,” said the recent order.

It further mentioned that the pension slip should provide the complete detail of the monthly pension paid along with break-up of the amount credited and tax deductions etc. if any.

On Wednesday,  the Central government had increased the rate of Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) after a gap of one-and-half years from 17 per cent to 28 per cent, benefiting nearly 1.14 crore employees and pensioners. The decision on the DA and DR was taken at the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

‘Mujhe accept nahi karenge’: Shaheer Sheikh was doubtful about replacing Sushant Singh Rajput in Pavitra Rishta 2

New Delhi: TV actor Shaheer Sheikh, who is set to play the role of Manav in the OTT reboot of the hit show Pavitra Rishta, recently opened up on his apprehensions and initial doubts about stepping into late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s former role. In an interview with an entertainment portal, he revealed that people around him questioned him if he really wanted to replace Sushant in the show and if he would be able to live up to his legacy. He confessed that this made him nervous as he feared that people might not accept him.

He told SpotboyE, “A lot of people told me that are you sure you want to do this character? Because it was a legendary character of such a hit show played by Sushant Singh Rajput. People will have very high expectations from you. I was anyway not very sure if I should take up the show and after hearing all such things, I started feeling even more nervous. In fact, the first thought I had was, ‘Mujhe accept hi nahi karenge log’.”

When asked about his thoughts on Sushant, Shaheer said, “I have met him twice but we didn’t know each other personally. What I know about him is that he was the guy who took the risk of quitting his hit television show for Bollywood. To attempt something big in life you have to take a big risk which he did. For television actors like us, he opened a way there. In my recent post also I had mentioned that how his way of accepting challenges motivated me to take up this challenge. Maine ye socha agar meri jagah Sushant hota to vo challenge ko face karta, harta nahi, darta nahi.”

“I remember during the release of Kai Po Che, a media person had asked me what do you think about it and I had told that he has opened the door for us. A long time back it was Shah Rukh Khan sir who did Circus on TV and ended up becoming a Bollywood star and now it is Sushant Singh Rajput,” he added.

A few days ago, netizens had taken to Twitter to express their discontentment over Shaheer replacing Sushant and flooded the microblogging site with #BoycottPavitraRishta.

Last week, on July 11, Ekta Kapoor’s digital platform ALTBalaji announced that the show will be back on screen with Shaheer Sheikh as Manav and Ankita Lokhande as Archana.

After Sushant Singh Rajput quit the show for his movie career, actor Hiten Tejwani played Manav’s role for almost 3 years. Pavitra Rishta went off-air in 2014.

The show completed 12 years on June 1, 2021, and recalling the project, Ankita Lokhande, took to her Instagram account and even shared a clip featuring her and Sushant. Created by Ekta Kapoor, the show revolved around Manav (Sushant) and Archana (Ankita), a married couple. The two became a household favourite with their stint on the Hindi drama. Sushant and Ankita dated for about six years before calling it quits.

Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020. The investigation is still underway.

Shahid Afridi on Pakistan’s 3-0 drubbing at the hands of England: The players representing are best we have

0

Shahid Afridi, one of the most popular Pakistan cricketers, has thrown his weight behind the Pakistan men’s national team following their ODI series against England, which concluded with a three-wicket win for the hosts at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Tuesday. The series gave England a 3-0 series win.

Shahid, who represented Pakistan in 27 Tests, 398 ODIs and 99 T20Is in a 20-year-long and distinguished international career, feels the players need the support of the fans and critics when they are down after a poor performance.

“At present, the players representing the Pakistan national team are the best we have in terms of talent and ability. These players have performed consistently in recent times, in fact, some of them have been performing for a considerable time period. These are our best players, they are the ones whose talent we have to utilise.

“We need to keep them motivated and hungry for success. We need to support the players in tough times, as a cricket fan and former player.

“I can accept the team losing as long as they fight it out on the field. I feel that cricket has changed a lot in recent years. Now, attack is the best defence and there is no way to succeed other than by playing with an attacking intent, especially in the white-ball formats.

“Our players are good at either attacking or blocking. Maybe, we need to find a middle way, especially for the ODI format. All our players need to back their abilities and play on their actual strength.”

Shahid, who played a leading role in Pakistan’s ICC World T20 2009 victory, feels the current side has the potential to match the exploits of the Younis Khan-led 2009 side, especially since the tournament is taking place in the UAE where Pakistan have played a lot of cricket with success against some of the leading teams in the world.

“In the UAE, we have a very good record and have done very well against some top-ranked teams and that augurs well for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Spinners and batters will have a prominent role to play in the UAE conditions. If the ball starts to reverse, then we have the potential of being the very best, if we play to our strength, we have a good chance of winning the tournament.”

Shahid concluded that he remains committed to fitness and cricket, and would continue to play franchise and club cricket as long as he is enjoying the game and remained fit, as this was the desire of his late father.

Shahid also expressed his desire to work with age-group players as a motivator while sharing the experiences of his cricketing journey.

Team needs to build towards ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the UAE conditions should suit Pakistan,” says the charismatic former captain, who is also delighted at the renewal of the PCB-Shahid Afridi Foundation partnership.

India Will Reduce More Than 33% Carbon Emission Target by 2030: Power Minister

Union Minister R K Singh on Thursday exuded confidence that India will exceed its target of reducing carbon emission set for 2030 under the Paris agreement. Speaking at the inaugural session of the CII-organised Aatmanirbhar Bharat – Self-Reliance for Renewable Energy Manufacturing conference, the Power, New and Renewable Energy Minister said that as per its commitment made in Paris, India has to reduce its carbon intensity to 33 per cent by 2030.

However, the way energy transition is taking place in India, “…in the matter of reducing the emission of Co2 will be much much beyond what India has pledged”, he added. He further said that as per the Paris agreement, India has to produce 40 per cent electricity of its total capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030.

“We are already at 39 per cent and if you add the capacities under installation it’s already 48 per cent. We are way beyond our NDC (nationally determined contributions) pledges,” the minister said. In his address, Singh expressed dissatisfaction over the approach of some nations towards pledges made under the Paris Agreement.

Without naming any country, he said there are countries whose per capita emissions are up to 9 times more than the global average, while India’s per capita carbon emission is just about one-third of the global average. “I frankly don’t see any meaningful step forward towards reducing by these countriestheir per capita emission. We hear, talk about pledges of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 but that is meaningless. I sound blunt and harsh but actually, it is meaningless,” he noted.

Countries must tell what they will do in the next five years and how they will reduce their per capita emission, the minister said, adding it is something “which nobody is telling”. In India, Singh said, energy transition is taking place rapidly and will continue to happen in future as well.

The minister had earlier said, ”We (India) are fastest (among all nations) in establishing renewable capacities. But, till all countries don’t come together, we can’t reduce global warming”.

CBI probe, trial outside state: NHRC in its report to Calcutta HC over Bengal post-poll violence

At least six people were killed in post poll violence in different parts of the state including one in the city, police had said.

The National Human Rights Commission India (NHRC) on Thursday recommended a CBI probe into alleged post-poll violence in West Bengal. In a strongly-worded report to five-judge bench of Calcutta High Court, the human rights body has also taken the Mamata Banerjee-state government to task.

“The spatio-temporal expanse of violent incidents in West Bengal reflects appalling apathy of the state govt towards the plight of victims,” the report said.

“This was retributive violence by supporters of the ruling party against supporters of the main opposition party. It resulted in disruption of life & livelihood of thousands of people & their economic strangulation,” it added.

The NHRC in its report has also made the following recommendations – trial should be moved outside the state, a court-monitored SIT should be set up, there should be a witness protection scheme. Police reforms, monitoring committees, Bureaucracy reforms should also be introduced, the NHRC said.

The state had witnessed a number of incidents of violence since the results of the assembly election were declared and rivals Trinamool Congress and the BJP have traded charges for it.

At least six people were killed in post poll violence in different parts of the state including one in the city, police had said.

NHRC report leaked: Mamata

Crying political vendetta in the NHRC report, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that it is an attempt to malign the state’s people.

“Instead of submitting (NHRC) report in the court, they’ve leaked it. They should respect the court. If it is not a political vendetta, how can they leak the report? They are maligning people of Bengal.”

“PM Modi knows very well that there is no rule of law in UP. How many commissions has he sent there? So many incidents, from Hathras to Unnao, have taken place. Even journalists are not spared. They give a bad name to Bengal. Maximum violence was pre-poll,” she added.

Amid Poll Buzz, Mamata Likely To Meet Sonia Gandhi, Other Opposition Leaders in Delhi in July-end

Mamata Banerjee’s massive win in Bengal assembly elections was highly applauded in the opposition camp

Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is likely to visit Delhi in July-end amid buzz around 2024 general election and poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s meeting with Congress leaders earlier this week, sources said. Banerjee will visit the national Capital for the first time since her win in the Bengal assembly polls.

According to sources, Banerjee is likely to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and other Opposition leaders. During her five-day visit, she’s likely to raise the issue of vaccination supply with the Centre.

Banerjee’s massive win in Bengal was highly applauded in the opposition camp and the regional leaders are most likely to meet her as key states such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab will go to polls next year.

Mamata’s Bengal model is now an example for the entire country therefore there are speculations that she may play a bigger role in the opposition.

Kishor, who had met senior Congress leaders such as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra earlier this week, was the key architect of the TMC’s election campaign in Bengal. His role in the assembly polls has been credited with the party’s two-third win in Bengal.

Mamata’s visit coincides with the monsoon session of Parliament, which begins from July 19.

Life Out Your Best Beach Life In COVID ‘Bubbles’: Mauritius Resorts Reopen, Only Vaccinated Tourists Allowed

Taxi driver George Lepoigner says he can’t wait for the tourists to start flocking back to the sun-soaked beaches of Mauritius. The Indian Ocean island nation opened up its doors to international travel on Thursday, after long months of isolation because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But there is a catch — only vaccinated holidaymakers with a negative PCR test will be allowed in, and even then they will have to be confined to “resort bubbles” for a 14-day quarantine. “Without tourists in the country, we do not have foreign currencies flowing in. We do not have the funds to keep us going,” Lepoigner, 55, said. “It is a tragedy,” the father of two added.

The global coronavirus crisis has battered the economy in Mauritius, a paradise holiday destination known for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and coral reefs. Before the pandemic hit in March 2020, the tourism and hospitality industry raked in about 24 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) and employed nearly a quarter of the workforce.

But in the last financial year, the Mauritian economy shrank by 15 percent, so the country is desperate for tourists to return. “We are preparing for a gradual and sustained recovery of the sector, aiming at 650,000 tourists over the next 12 months,” Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy said in June.

He said the government would give the tourism authority 420 million Mauritian rupees (8.3 million euros, $9.7 million) to promote the island in key markets such as China, Europe and South Africa. But with a full reopening to international travellers only planned from October 1, hoteliers will have to wait for business to bounce back.

Le Mauricien newspaper reported that 600 tourists were expected to land on Thursday on three flights from Europe and Dubai. They’ll be able to use their resort’s facilities and beach — but not the spa, and cannot explore the islands until after the two-week quarantine.

Immense economic shock

Gilbert Espitalier-Noel, CEO of New Mauritius Hotels, which owns a string of resorts, says glumly that he doesn’t expect a recovery until the last quarter of the year. The hotel group’s revenue plunged in the nine months to March 2021 to 940 million rupees from 7.6 billion a year earlier.

“While we have taken steps to minimise expenses, through pay cuts, voluntary retirements and keeping capital and operating expenditure at a minimum, the upkeep of the hotels remains significant,” he said, adding that the company had applied for a state-funded subsidy to stay afloat.

The effects of the pandemic have not been limited to the tourism sector, spilling out into other areas of the economy including transport, agriculture, retail and support services.

“Mauritius has not escaped this immediate and immense economic shock and destruction with ripple effects beyond the sector itself,” economist Rama Sithanen told AFP.

And Mauritius, like other nations across the world, is continuing to battle more virulent strains of the virus.

The nation of 1.2 million people has reported about 2,190 Covid infections and 20 deaths, although the figures may not reflect the true situation because of limited testing.

But for Lepoigner, the return of tourists cannot come soon enough.

“Even though there is a risk of contamination with the new variant, either we die of hunger, or we die of Covid. I’ll pick Covid since 99.9 percent of Mauritians have survived the virus since last year,” he said.

Kamal Nath as Cong Chief? Rumours Abuzz as Former CM Meets Sonia Amid Leadership Reshuffle Plan

Kamal Nath arrives at 10, Janpath to meet the party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi

Some reports stated that the much-delayed election for the Congress president’s post will be held after the Monsoon session of Parliament.

Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath arrived at Sonia Gandhi’s residence on Thursday to meet party’s interim president, sparking speculations of being chosen the next Congress president.

According to sources, Gandhi and Nath are meeting to discuss “changes in the party”. The former CM is among the front-runners for the post of Congress president. Some reports stated that the much-delayed election for the Congress president’s post will be held after the Monsoon session of Parliament.

Kamal Nath, considered close to Gandhi family, is a former Union Minister and has been a parliamentarian nine times. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1980.

The Congress party has been mulling changes in leadership for quite some time now. In May, the Congress puts off party president election for third time citing Covid-19 pandemic.

Election for party’s top post has been in turmoil ever since Congress’s debacle in 2019. Rahul Gandhi, who took over the post from mother Sonia Gandhi in 2017, stepped down after the 2019 defeat.

In a letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi on August 23, 2020, 23 senior party leaders observed that the uncertainly over the leadership and the drift in the party have weakened Congress and demoralized the workers.

The Congress has since failed to find a replacement and, thus, urged Sonia Gandhi to continue as the party’s interim chief.
