World Cup 2023: Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer made the mistake of going too hard, too early, says Parthiv Patel

Former India wicket-keeping batter Parthiv Patel has said that Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer made the mistake of going too hard, too early against Australia in their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup opener. Kishan and Iyer were dismissed for ducks as India beat Australia by six wickets at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Patel said Kishan and Iyer made the mistake of going too hard, too early in Chennai. Kishan and Iyer were dismissed for ducks to leave India reeling at 2 for 3 in 2 overs.

“When you are playing on a pitch like this, you need to spend a bit of time. It is not easy to just go out there and play your shots. Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer made the mistake of going too hard, too early,” said Patel.

He went on to say that both Kishan and Iyer will learn from their mistakes against Australia. Both Kishan and Iyer were dismissed while playing loose shots against Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood respectively.

“However, it was important to get a good start, and runs could have been scored quickly in the first 10 overs. That must have played in their minds. They will learn from this,” Patel added.

Following the early dismissals of Rohit Sharma, Kishan and Iyer, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli stitched a massive 165-run partnership for the fourth wicket to turn the tide of the match. In fact, this was India’s biggest partnership against Australia in ODI World Cups.

Kohli was dismissed after scoring 85 runs off 110 balls, while Rahul remained unbeaten on 97 to guide India home with six wickets and 52 balls remaining.

Following their win over Australia, India will turn their attention towards Afghanistan, with the two sides set to lock horns at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on October 11.
