Two electricity projects under way to bring 2,000 MW power to Mumbai | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Two projects have been designed to bring 2,000 MW power to Mumbai, a 400 KV Kharghar-Vikhroli transmission line, which is likely to be ready by the year-end and the Kudus-Aarey transmission corridor, likely by 2025.
– It is an HVDC (high voltage direct current) project, which will bring additional 1,000 MW renewable energy to Mumbai
– The 320KV transmission link will ensure uninterrupted supply of renewable power to Mumbai
– It is critical given the city’s transmission capacity constraints amidst its fast-rising energy demand
– It will enhance grid stability by providing an interface with the state and national grids
– HVDC transmission technology is superior to other conventional technologies as it stabilises the power distribution network
– It is an environment-friendly option as it transmits more energy/sq m, and results in lower energy losses

– Mumbai’s electricity demand is expected to touch 5,000 MW by 2024-25 from the current peak demand of 3,500-4,000 MW
– The island city has only 1,800 MW of embedded generation capacity and the existing transmission corridors face capacity constraint risks
– Due to new Metro lines and EV charging stations, demand to rise by at least 150 MW in a year.

– The existing transmission network is close to its full capacity in terms of utilisation
– In case of outage of any transmission line (due to fault or maintenance), the system shifts to operate in a critical state where any further tripping can result in a load shedding or a blackout situation as was witnessed in October 2020
