Thane municipal corporation seeks 100% increase in water supply volume | Thane News – Times of India

THANE: The Thane municipal corporation (TMC) has written to the Maharashtra state government to allow a near 100% increase from its existing water supply volume justifying its demand to the rapid population growth as compared to other cities in the metropolitan region, officials said.
Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, Thursday, said the city gets around 585mld water daily and has sought over 1116 mld water from various reservoirs and proposed dam projects to cater to its population by 2053.
A civic official said the issue was discussed at a high-level meeting with chief minister Eknath Shinde a few months ago over providing additional water supply to Thane.
The corporation accordingly prepared a proposal and has now sent a request for additional water to the state irrigation department, informed an official.
“We are witnessing a rapid growth in population and accordingly we have sought a share from a few under-construction water supply projects and simultaneously asked for an increase in share from reservoirs where we are already lifting water. This will cater to the water supply needs of the growing population of the city that presently has nearly 27 lakh residents,” said a civic official.
Presently, the city gets 585 mld water from agencies like MIDC, STEM, BMC and its own network but the same is largely proving inadequate leaving a large volume of population especially in Diva and even the prime Ghodbunder road to rely largely on alternate sources like tankers.
“We are seeking allocations of an additional 100mld from Barvi, 50mld from Bhatsa in addition to our existing quota. Also, we are seeking allocation of 50 mld each from stem and mld from the Surya project for Mira Bhayender corporation and an additional quota from the Deharji dam project in Vikramgadh taluka. We will also seek reservation of water from the Mumri dam in Shahapur in addition to the proposed Kalu dam,” explained an official.
Meanwhile, several existing consumers of Thane complained of inadequate water supply to their areas. The corporation claimed it was working on remodeling its storage and distribution network.
