Sensex drops over 100 points in early trade

Equity benchmark Sensex dropped over 100 points in early trade on Wednesday, tracking losses in index majors ICICI Bank, HDFC twins and Reliance Industries amid a negative trend in global markets. The 30-share BSE index was trading 104.99 points or 0.20 per cent lower at 52,664.74 in initial deals, while the broader NSE Nifty slipped 31.80 points or 0.20 per cent to 15,780.55.

Maruti was the top loser in the Sensex pack, slipping around 1 per cent, followed by ICICI Bank, HDFC, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank and Tata Steel. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, L&T, HCL Tech and Sun Pharma were among the gainers.

In the previous session, Sensex ended 397.04 points or 0.76 per cent higher at 52,769.73, and the broader NSE Nifty surged 119.75 points or 0.76 per cent to settle at 15,812.35.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market as they purchased shares worth Rs 113.83 crore on Tuesday, as per provisional exchange data.

According to Binod Modi Head-Strategy at Reliance Securities, benchmark Nifty appears to be consolidating in the range of 15,600-15,900.

“However, we continue to believe that any meaningful correction in the market should be taken as an opportunity to get in quality stocks.

“Visible improvement in key economic data including IIP, import-export business momentum and visible traction in overall economic activities in June indicates healthy corporate earnings for 1QFY22E despite the second wave of COVID-19,” he said.

US markets finished lower as a higher-than-expected jump in CPI print for June weighed on investors’ sentiments, he added.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai, Seoul, Hong Kong and Tokyo were trading with losses in mid-session deals.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude declined 0.31 per cent to USD 76.25 per barrel.

Smriti Mandhana said that the upcoming months going into the 2022 Women’s World Cup will be a crucial period for India.

India women’s opener Smriti Mandhana said that the team needs to improve its batting significantly in ODIs going into the 2022 Women’s World Cup. Mandhana said that India have to try and score in excess of 260 runs consistently batting first.

“We have to work on a lot of things, especially in the batting department. Going forward, the next seven months will be really crucial,” Mandhana said in a virtual press conference. “We have to start putting up good scores. If I talk about the ODI format, we have to start posting 250-260-plus scores consistently while batting first, that’s something we have to work on.”

“And of course, our bowling and fielding can get consistent. We are probably one good performance (away) and then becoming okay, so I think we can be consistent in that department as well,” said Mandhana.

The 2022 World Cup is scheduled to be held from March 4 to April 3 next year in New Zealand. India’s next assignment will be in Australia, where they play three ODIs, three T20Is and one day-night Test over the course of September and October.

“Next seven months will be very crucial to get ourselves ready before the World Cup (in New Zealand). Of course, the Australia series will also going to be big in terms of preparations for the World Cup,” said Mandhana.

India presently go into the third T20I against England with a chance to win the series after a heartening performance in the second match helped them level the rubber 1-1. Mandhana said that she and opening partner Shafali Verma, who turned heads with her performance in the one-off Test against England earlier, need to work on staying in the middle for longer periods in T20Is.

“For about two years now, I’ve been opening with her in the T20 format. It’s really exciting to open with her in all the three formats. We know each other, have conversations. It really helps especially in T20 format. But we have to work on how to carry on till 15-16th over.

“We have had discussions about the middle overs and death overs and how we can get better. Losing wickets too many at a time puts a break in run-rate and puts pressure on the new batters. It has happened in previous formats as well. We all have understood our mistakes and will hope to rectify them,” she said.

Political strategist Prashant Kishor on Tuesday met not just the Gandhi siblings — Rahul and Priyanka — but also Sonia Gandhi, sparking buzz of a strategy in the works to halt the BJP juggernaut in the 2024 elections.

There was speculation that the meeting at Rahul Gandhi’s residence was related to the Punjab and Uttar Pradesh elections as leaders such as former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat, who also is the Congress in-charge for Punjab, and KC Venugopal, general secretary (organisation), were spotted entering the premises.

However, sources aware of the developments said since the entire Gandhi family was present for the meeting, the agenda was national politics — specifically sprucing up a blueprint for the 2024 polls.

The meeting also assumes significance as Kishor and Rahul Gandhi met after almost five years, following a strain in their bond since the UP elections in 2017 where the ‘UP Ki Ladki’ strategy and slogan failed to take off.

In private, after the results were out, Kishor said this was expected as the Congress was stubborn and arrogant. He also said that there was no question of working with the party in the future but he would often stay in touch with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The poll strategist, who shares a bonhomie with regional satraps, also met NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar thrice last month, signalling talks were on for a consolidated front against the BJP. This was accentuated by the spectacular victory of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the recent polls in which Kishor played a crucial role. Banerjee was congratulated by several opposition leaders for her feat, with many political observers calling it a soft signal of unity.

While Kishor is of the view that a “third front” per say is a futile exercise — he had earlier said he doesn’t believe a “third or fourth front can challenge BJP as history has also shown such fronts do not have capacity”, the latest meeting with the Gandhis hints at a major plan in the works to come up with not just an opposition bloc but a face to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

MUMBAI: A First Information Report was registered against 42 persons including organizers of a public gathering at BJP leader Pankaja Munde’s office at Worli in Central Mumbai on Tuesday for the violation of COVID-19-related restrictions, police said here.
A case was registered under IPC sections 188 (disobedience of lawful order issued by a public servant) and 269 (act likely to spread infection) besides the Disaster Management Act against the organizers and participants of the gathering, an official said.
Munde’s supporters had gathered at her office in Worli to show their support after her sister and MP Pritam Munde did not get a berth in the Union cabinet in the recent expansion. Addressing her supporters, Pankaja Munde, BJP national secretary and a former state minister, dismissed reports that she was using “pressure tactics”, and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda were her leaders.

ओंगोल (आंध्र प्रदेश)। आंध्र प्रदेश के प्रकाशम जिले में पुलिस ने 7 साल की बच्ची से दुष्कर्म और हत्या के आरोप में एक 30 वर्षीय व्यक्ति दुदेकुला सिद्धैया को गिरफ्तार किया है। एक पुलिस अधिकारी ने मंगलवार को कहा, गुरुवार को आरोपी 7 साल की बच्ची को अपने घर ले आया, जो उसके घर के पास खेल रही थी। फिर उसने उसका यौन उत्पीड़न किया और फिर गला दबाकर उसे मार दिया।

यह सुनिश्चित करने के लिए कि लड़की मर गई है, सिद्दैया ने उसका सिर एक चट्टान से भी मार दिया क्योंकि उसे डर था कि नाबालिग अगर बच गई तो वह दूसरों को बता सकती है कि उसने उसके साथ क्या किया।

बाद में, उसने उसके शरीर को एक प्लास्टिक की थैली में लपेट दिया और उसे प्रकाशम जिले के गिद्दालुरु मंडल के अंबावरम गांव के बाहरी इलाके में फेंक दिया।

इस भीषण घटना के बाद, पुलिस ने विशेष टीमों का गठन किया था, जो सोमवार शाम को गिद्दलुरु बस स्टैंड के गेट के पास से आरोपी को गिरफ्तार करने में सफल रही।

पुलिस ने आईपीसी की धारा 366 (ए), 342, 376 (ए) (बी), 302, 201 और पोक्सो अधिनियम की धारा 6 के तहत मामला दर्ज किया है। (आईएएनएस)

After kicking-off the election campaign in Punjab and Uttarakhand, Aam Aadmi Party chief (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal is in Goa on Wednesday where he is expected to announce 300 units of free electricity to the people of the state as a pre-poll promise.

Kejriwal, who landed in Goa at 2:45pm at the Dabolim Airport a day earlier, will address a press conference on Wednesday at AAP’s Panaji office quarters ahead of the 2022 assembly elections in the coastal state.

According to highly placed sources within AAP, consumption above 300 units would be charged at 50 per cent only.

When CNN-News18 contacted AAP Goa vice-president Pratima Countinho, she refused to comment but stated that the party was involved in taking major decisions. Countinho added that the AAP was an alternative force to the BJP and hence, was expecting major inductions in the next few days.

Kejriwal has been powering his campaign in poll-bound states with promises of 300 units of free electricity, In Punjab, where power disruptions are a major poll plank, the Delhi chief minister made three promises — to provide 300 units of electricity free to every household in Punjab, waive off pending electricity bill of every domestic consumer and provide uninterrupted electricity supply 24 hours a day.

Pointing out that electricity tariffs were among the highest in the country despite Punjab producing more electricity than it needs, Kejriwal argued that the high rates could be explained by a ‘dirty nexus’ between the electricity companies and the political governing class of Punjab.

He replicated the model in Uttarakhand, which goes to polls in 2022. In Uttarakhand’s capital Dehradun on Sunday, Kejriwal made four big-ticket announcements to woo voters ahead of the 2022 elections — 300 units of free electricity, free power for farmers, waiver of old bills and 24-hour electricity supply.

The Delhi chief minister’s promise came just a day after he asked why the people of Uttarakhand, which generates electricity, cannot get free power like in the national capital. AAP has decided to contest the Assembly polls in the state due next year.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is looking to expand its base in six major states going for polls in the next one and a half years. Assembly elections in Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat will be held in 2022 and AAP has announced to contest polls in all the six states. Punjab is the only state where the Arvind Kejriwal-led party is a major player.

However, the inroads it made in Gujarat in the local body polls boosted AAP’s morale to fight the BJP in its home turf. While, AAP had contested most of these six states unsuccessfully in 2017, the party this time hopes to ride on Kejriwal’s popularity after he repeated his landslide victory in Delhi in February 2020 to become the Chief Minister of the national capital city for the third time.

Moreover, the AAP is promoting the ‘Delhi model’ to position itself as an alternative to Congress and BJP. AAP is also riding high after gaining political mileage over its free electricity policy in Delhi. Therefore, the party has promised free power upto 300 units in both Punjab and Uttarakhand.

Senior Ministers, Nadda Discuss BJP Strategy for Monsoon Session


Senior Union Ministers and BJP chief J.P. Nadda met on Tuesday to discuss the party’s strategy for the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament starting from July 19.

A party insider said that the meeting was held at Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence and lasted for around three hours.

Union Ministers Amit Shah, Dharmendra Pradhan, Pralhad Joshi, Bhupender Yadav, Arjun Ram Meghwal and others were present in the meeting along with party chief Nadda.

“Strategy for the upcoming monsoon session was discussed. Strategy for countering opposition attacks on issues like Covid management, inflation and others were discussed in detail,” the party insider said.

The government is expecting a stormy session in which opposition parties are likely to corner it on Covid management during the second wave, and fuel prices.

“It was decided that we will counter the opposition attack by highlighting government efforts to contain the second wave and plans for managing the third wave, and measures for people and measures taken to boost the economy,” a source said.

The BJP has to also appoint a new Leader of House in the Rajya Sabha after Union Minister Thawarchand Gehlot was made Governor of Karnataka. Names of senior party leaders and some Union Ministers are already doing rounds for the possible replacement.

This will be the first parliament session after Assembly polls in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Keral and Puducherry.D
