SL vs IND | Uncapped trio of Padikkal, Sakariya and Rana eager to learn from Rahul Dravid
The uncapped trio of Devdutt Padikkal, Nitish Rana and Chetan Sakariya are looking to imbibe the traits of Rahul Dravid — the player, person and coach — during the tour of Sri Lanka.
As many as six uncapped players are part of the India squad for the series beginning here on July 18. NCA chief Dravid is head coach on the tour with the Test team currently in the UK.
“Being from the same school, the first time I actually met him was in one of our sports day events, where I had to present him with a bouquet – that is when I spoke to him for the first time,” Padikkal recalled on Star Sports.
The elegant left-handed batsman has been awestruck by Dravid’s down to earth nature.
“I have always been awestruck by how incredibly calm and gentle a human being he is. To have achieved so much in cricket and to be so down to earth, humble and kind towards everyone is incredible to watch,” added the 21-year-old, who plays for Karnataka.
“To have him (Dravid) as our coach, you couldn’t ask for anything more and to have a mentor like him beside you, it’s just a great feeling, and hopefully, I can pick up a lot of things from him,” said Padikkal.
Another southpaw Nitish Rana is also looking forward to working with Dravid.
“I have heard that Rahul Dravid as a coach is similar to Rahul Dravid as a player. I wish I could bring even one per cent of the patience he has within me; it will be a big achievement for me,” said Rana, who plays for Delhi in domestic cricket.
Even rookie Saurashtra pacer Chetan Sakariya wants to be as determined as Dravid.
“I would want to learn how he was so determined when the opposing teams like Australia and England played dominant cricket.
“I want to understand how he troubled them and how he could achieve so much with sheer determination. I want to learn and understand the process which goes behind that mindset,” said Sakariya.
India will take on Sri Lanka in the limited overs series, comprising three ODIs and as many T20s, beginning here from July 18.
New York: Heart problems in children, who were hospitalised with the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C) — an inflammatory condition triggered by COVID — lasted just a few months and resolved rapidly, suggests a study.
MIS-C is a rare condition that causes widespread inflammation throughout the body. Many children with MIS-C were asymptomatic or had mild COVID symptoms at first but weeks later developed a variety of nonrespiratory symptoms including abdominal pain, skin rashes, heart abnormalities, and, in some cases, extremely low blood pressure.
However, these were mostly gone within a few months, revealed the study by researchers at Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian.
“We’ve learned that COVID causes a spectrum of illness in children. Some are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and a small number of kids who develop MIS-C become critically ill, requiring admission to the ICU,” said Kanwal M. Farooqi, Assistant Professor of pediatrics at Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.
“It is a relief that this study shows that most of the severe heart and immunologic manifestations we saw in kids with MIS-C resolved rapidly,” Farooqi added.
The small study, published in the journal Pediatrics, analysed about 45 MIS-C patients. Nearly 80 percent of the children had some type of cardiac dysfunction, and almost half had moderate to severe cardiac abnormalities, including decreased ability of the heart to pump properly, coronary artery dilation, and leaking heart valves.
Two-thirds of the children also experienced a temporary decrease in the number of white blood cells during their hospital stay. The majority had an increase in inflammatory markers, and more than half also had elevated cardiac-specific markers indicating heart injury.
Most of the patients responded rapidly to steroids and other treatments and were discharged by about five days. The immunologic abnormalities and markers for heart injury returned to normal within a few weeks and by four months, most of the heart abnormalities had resolved, including all of the coronary artery abnormalities, Farooqi said.
“Nevertheless, given the absence of long-term data, we are recommending that children who had more than mild dysfunction on cardiac ultrasound should get a cardiac MRI at six months and see a pediatrician before being cleared for competitive sports,” he noted.

If there’s one thing keeping Maharashtra government in the news, it has to be the cat-and-mouse game among allies of the MVA who seem to be on the fence about their power structure.
Two days after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said he had been against the Congress and NCP — his allies — politically, state Congress chief Nana Patole stirred up a hornet’s nest by calling NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar the “remote control” of the government.
“There is no doubt that Sharad Pawar is remote control (of Maharashtra government). We (Congress) do not make statements against any big leader, but any outsider should look into own party before making statements,” Patole said.
The Congress leader’s statement came after he reportedly asked the party workers to install “our person” as guardian minister of Pune in place of NCP leader Ajit Pawar. Senior Pawar soon hit back, saying he will not react to what “small people” say but will speak if Sonia Gandhi says something.
Pawar also downplayed Patole’s repeated vow that Congress, which is a constituent of the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government along with the NCP, will contest future elections solo.
“Every party has a right to expand its base and there is nothing wrong in it. The Shiv Sena took that stand so did Congress. The NCP has also adopted the same stand (of expanding the base of the party),” he said, adding the three parties are running the government together but their organisations are separate.
So, what’s the latest in the MVA’s power tussle?
Sulking Congress a Third Wheel?
For the grand old party, the Maharashtra power-sharing arrangement was more of survival tactic, given its rapid decline across the country. Congress leaders have always seemed uncomfortable in the three-party government, often complaining that they feel like a “third wheel”. The party’s senior leadership was not in favour of allying with the Shiv Sena when the MVA was formed, but it joined the coalition to keep the BJP away from power.
Patole, for instance, has always trained his guns on the allies. Patole created a buzz when he earlier announced that his party would fight the next Assembly elections on its own and install a chief minister of the Congress. He has also said that if the party allows, he himself would be the next chief ministerial face. “We already have announced that we will go solo in all forthcoming local body elections, likely to be held from November, and thereafter the Assembly polls too. We do not want to keep our allies in the dark and ditch them ahead of the polls. We are preparing to go solo and they too are free to do so. The Congress will be the single-largest party in 2024 Assembly polls,” he said.
The rift seems to have widened since Patole alleged he was kept under surveillance by intelligence agencies at the behest of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar
The Congress, since the government was formed in November 2019, has been complaining about secondary treatment by its allies. Party leaders feel that the Sena and NCP have been on the same page when it comes to keeping the Congress out of the decision-making process.
Sharad pawar’s national ambitions?
The tallest leader of the alliance, Pawar — a seasoned politician — is credited with bringing together the unlikely partners. There have often been accusations that not Thackeray but Pawar is the one running the show.
Pawar’s stature was also in the news recently amid reports that he was a candidate for the Presidential election. The buzz gathered steam after he met poll strategist Prashant Kishor thrice since May. The meetings also generated talks of Pawar firming up a united front of all opposition parties to take on the BJP juggernaut in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
However, Pawar dismissed all the speculation of him assuming any leadership role in 2024 by saying, “Nothing has been decided so far — be it the 2024 General Elections or state elections. The election is far away, and the political situation keeps changing. I am not going to assume any leadership in the 2024 elections.”
Pawar further said that during his meetings with Kishor, the discussion wasn’t around politics. “Prashant Kishor met me twice, but we only talked about a company of his. No discussion was held regarding the leadership for the 2024 elections or the Presidential election. Prashant Kishor told me that he has left the field of formulating poll strategies,” he added.
So what about Uddhav Thackeray?
Thackeray’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, days before the recent cabinet reshuffle, triggered the speculation that a BJP-Sena rapprochement was on the anvil. Reports suggested that the once-bitten BJP, which lost a 24-hour government it hastily cobbled in 2019 with a splinter group of the NCP after the Maharashtra elections, was prepared to let Thackeray continue as the CM.
That meant that its former incumbent, Devendra Fadnavis, would forsake his ambitions to return in lieu of a berth in the union cabinet. Fadnavis declared that “we may have differences with the Sena but we are not enemies”. Rajya Sabha lawmaker Sanjay Raut—regarded as Thackeray’s ventriloquist as the executive editor of the “Saamana”, the Sena’s mouthpiece—fuelled the buzz, saying the BJP-Sena friendship was “intact”.
Thackeray is counted among the strong regional leaders, his intrinsic value being enhanced by governing a state like Maharashtra. He has refashioned Sena 2.0 in his own way, softening the harsh edges of its Hindutva advocacy in a more pluralistic manner that adheres to the precept of “Sarva Dharma Samabhava” without sounding irreligious or pandering to the minorities. He also opposed the sort of militant vegetarianism propagated by the BJP, knowing that first and foremost, culinary fundamentalism will anger the Maharashtrians who love their fish, fowl and meat, wrote senior journalist Radhika Ramaseshan for News18.
For the Maharashtra chief minister, keeping the bickering allies together seems to be a mammoth task. However, it is the interest of all three bound together by the survival glue to pull through.

New Delhi: Model-actor Darasing Khurana, an active philanthropist, came up with the Pause.Breathe.Talk Foundation to help those who suffer from a mental condition and to offer mental health services to the needy. Khurana launched the foundation after the sudden death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput last year.
The Pause.Breathe.Talk Foundation has several psychologists and psychiatrists in the panel, who have been helping the needy for over a year. During this time, he realised that many people suffer from social anxiety, a serious mental health condition, where everyday social interactions cause anxiety, fear or embarrassment. So Darasing, who’s also a socially active celebrity along with leading experts in the field have come up with five things to overcome social anxiety. Here’s what they suggest:
Watch your breathing
Breathing techniques are often recommended to promote relaxation or for dealing with stress or anxiety attacks. When you breathe, your blood cells receive oxygen and release carbon dioxide. When people are anxious, however, they tend to take rapid, shallow breaths from the chest. Whenever you are anxious, focus on your breathing. Breathe in, hold your breath and count till 5, and then breathe out. If you do this for 70-80 times, you’ll definitely feel calmer.
Behaviour modification is a must
Remember, nothing will change around you! The social situation will continue to remain the way it is. So, the best way is to plan thoroughly for a social situation that makes you nervous. For instance, if it’s about going on a date, you should plan for each and every aspect of it. The idea is to recognise what triggers your anxiety and try to minimise the activities that might trigger anxiety. Also, if you feel socially anxious and you want to work on it, you must start going out with people who are close to you and who will take care of you when you’re feeling anxious.
Have a gratitude journal
You must write down the positive things that happened with you throughout the day. One thing that counters anxiety a lot is gratitude. Initially, it might look a bit fake and may demand a lot of effort, but you must still do it. Initially, your negative thoughts might be too overpowering, but you must understand the negative thoughts are already there within you, so you must cultivate thoughts of gratitude to balance things out.
Sweat it out
When we feel anxious, our body is primed for fight or flight, and releases the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline; this can cause elevated blood pressure, a racing heart, and sweating. Exercise can help us burn off the negative energy that, in our more primitive days, would have been used either fleeing, or fighting, a threat. You could take a brisk walk, put on your running shoes and hit the tarmac, or jump around to an aerobics video or your favourite music in your living room. Regular exercise and meditation really help in keeping one centred. That’s something you must do if you want to overcome social anxiety.
Open up, meet the experts
Communication is the key in all mental health conditions. Sharing your feelings and speaking to people around you is pertinent. Listening is also important at times. Imagine something is triggering your anxiety, which is a result of negative thoughts about you that come to your mind again and again. If you shift the focus of your thoughts towards someone else, that also helps in containing the anxiety. Also, make sure you reach out to a psychologist and a psychiatrist. Professional guidance is a must if you want the best results. It’s imperative to use these two services simultaneously rather than giving importance to one and skipping the other. Medication and therapy are equally important.

Bhopal: As the issue of reservation quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) continues to ripple politics in Madhya Pradesh, the Shivraj Chouhan government is planning to move the Supreme Court on the matter.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court, which is currently hearing close to three dozen petitions on the proposed increase in OBC quota from 14% to 27%, on July 13 refused to allow the hike, and instructed the state government to continue with recruitments using 14% OBC reservation.
On Wednesday evening, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had convened a meeting of BJP OBC cell and wherein it was decided that the state government will approach the SC on the quota issue.
Besides, the meeting also discussed proposed hike in OBC creamy layer from existing Rs 8 lakh annual limit to Rs 12 lakh per annum, a senior leader of the BJP said.
MLAs, MPS and leaders of OBC cell took part in the meeting and future strategy of the cell besides discussing HC’s verdict of keeping the OBC quota limited at 14% for the time being, Bhagat Singh Kushwah, the BJP OBC cell state head said.
The state government will pursue this matter as per set norms, he added.
On Tuesday, the HC had allowed the state government to carry on with recruitments but with 14% OBC quota norm and keep 13% reservation benefits in the reserve until final orders.
Following a dispute in OBC quota, which was hiked by then CM Kamal Nath to 27%, large numbers of recruitments have been stalled as the HC is yet to dispose of the matter. The state government on Tuesday had sought HC guidelines on recruitment of medical officers and others ahead of possible covid19 third wave.
The Congress has been mounting pressure on the BJP government for ensuring that OBCs benefit from the 27% quota.
