Madhya Pradesh floods: Death toll rises to 24 in rain-hit parts of state


Bhopal: The fatality count in rain-related incidents in flood-ravaged Gwalior and Chambal divisions of Madhya Pradesh increased to 24 throughout the state.

The authorities said that the flood situation is slowly improving and at present “no life-threatening” scenario exists in the region, where rescue and relief work is currently on.

“The death toll in the rain-related incidents in the flood-hit parts of the state has risen to 24. These fatalities were recorded between August 1 and 7,” Revenue Secretary Gyaneshwar Patil said, according to news agency PTI.

Till Friday, officials pegged the number of deceased at 12, on Saturday the death toll was reported to have reached 24.

The flood situation in north Madhya Pradesh had turned grim earlier this week, where more than 1,250 villages were affected by the deluge following heavy rains. 

Gwalior, Shivpuri, Sheopur, Datia, Ashok Nagar, Guna, Bhind and Morena districts were affected as the region was being pounded by rains for the whole week.

However, from Thursday, the intensity of rainfall in the two divisions started going down.

“No life threatening situation due to flooding exists in Gwalior and Chambal divisions at present,” Divisional Commissioner Ashish Saxena said.

Addressing ‘Anna Utsav’ programme earlier in the day, state Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that 8,832 people were rescued from the flood-affected parts of the state, while 29,280 others have been shifted to safer places from these areas so far.

Saxena said that around 50 people, who were stuck in flooded areas of Ashok Nagar district in Gwalior division, have been moved to safety.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Air Force (IAF) have reached Ashok Nagar for the rescue operation, he said, adding that Army columns are also scheduled to reach the affected areas.

“The rescue operation in the affected areas is almost over and relief work is gathering steam,” the official said.

Meanwhile, P K Saha, senior meteorologist with the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Bhopal office said that Ashok Nagar and Guna districts in Gwalior division received 32.0 mm and 164.1 mm rainfall, respectively, in 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Saturday.

“The low pressure area is lying over northern parts of east Madhya Pradesh and its neighbourhood now. It was over central parts of north Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood on Friday,” he said.

With its shift to east MP, the flood situation in Gwalior and Chambal is likely to improve as rain activity is likely to lessen from Saturday.

In a series of tweets in the morning, the chief minister said, “I took a stock of the flood situation and the ongoing rescue operation this morning in Guna, Ashoknagar, Vidisha districts. Rescue operation of IAF resumed this morning. The teams of SDRF and NDRF are also working since night to rescue the people trapped in villages.”

He said that during the rescue operations carried out using helicopters, 15 persons each were rescued from Barri and Sirsora villages of flood hit Ashok Nagar district on Saturday morning.

Six more persons were rescued from Vasunia Ghat village from the same district and shifted to a safer place. From Vidisha district, the teams rescued six persons, who were trapped on a tree at Riniya village of Vidisha district, he said.

Meanwhile, state Congress chief Kamal Nath visited the flood-affected people in the region on Saturday.

Trinamool Claims Attack on Partymen in Tripura, BJP Denies Charges


The Trinamool Congress claimed on Saturday that at least seven of its leaders and workers were seriously injured after their vehicle and a party office was allegedly attacked by the ruling BJP members in separate incidents in Tripura.

Several Trinamool leaders, including the party’s national General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and chief spokesman Kunal Ghosh, made a series of tweets on these incidents and demanded arrest of the attackers.

“The goons of BJP Tripura have shown their true colours! This barbaric attack on Trinamool workers reveals the ‘goonda raj’ in Tripura under BJP Biplab’s (Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb) govt! Your threats and attacks only prove your inhumanity. Do what you can. Trinamool will not budge an inch,” Banerjee said in a tweet.

The convoy of Banerjee, who’s also a Lok Sabha member, was also allegedly attacked by BJP workers during his visit to Tripura on Monday.

Ghosh said that seven party leaders and workers, including youth leaders Debangshu Bhattacharya, Sudip Raha and Jaya Dutta from West Bengal, were injured when they were attacked by BJP workers at Ambassa in Dhalai district.

He said a Trinamool party office was totally damaged by the ruling party workers at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district.

“Instead of arresting the attackers, the police detained several of our leaders and workers, including Subal Bhowmik, in Dharmanagar on Saturday night. We would meet the Governor (Satyadev Narayan Arya) soon to demand the arrest of the BJP goons. The Trinamool will not tolerate the BJP government’s jungle raj,” Ghosh said.

The opposition CPI-M has also condemned the alleged attack on Trinamool, saying that democracy has been totally throttled under the BJP government in the state since March 2018.

Strongly denying the charges, the BJP claimed that the Trinamool is entirely a non-factor in Tripura and the ruling party of West Bengal is trying to spread the “virus of political violence” in the northeastern state, where “outsiders” with the backing of CPI-M are fomenting trouble and lawlessness.

BJP spokesman Nabendu Bhattacherjee said that over 500 party workers and members from West Bengal took shelter in Tripura while hundreds of others went to Assam after being attacked by the Trinamool workers in Bengal following the declaration of Asssembly election results there in May.

He also demanded a high-level probe into both the incidents in Dharmanagar and in Ambassa.

Protesting against the alleged attacks, Trinamool workers led by Subal Bhowmik, who along with other leaders quit the Congress last month and joined the Trinamool, staged a road blockade on National Highway-8 in Dharmanagar, prompting the police to fire tear gas shells to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control.

The road blockade forced Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb to take a detour while returning to a helipad on the outskirts of Dharmanagar town after attending some programmes at the district headquarters.

Neeraj Chopra, the 2018 Commonwealth champion, seized the lead with a throw of 87.03 on his first attempt, a distance no other competitor achieved during the final, winning India’s first gold of the Tokyo Games as his overjoyed team mates and coaches watched from the stands.

Tokyo 20202 Olympics star Neeraj Chopra created history on Saturday as he won the men’s javelin on Saturday with a best throw of 87.58 metres to claim a historic first Olympic athletics gold medal for India.

Neeraj Chopra threw the javelin 87.03m in his first throw and bettered it with 87.58m but couldn’t go any further. Chopra managed four legitimate throws of 87.03m, 87.58m, 76.79m and 84.24m while his fourth and fifth throws were disqualified. But his second throw was way better than the rest and enough to secure the gold for India.

The Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch won silver with 86.67 metres and Vitezslav Vesely claimed the bronze with 85.44.

“This is the biggest day of my life and sporting career. Winning gold for India in athletics is a very big thing. I tried to break the Olympic record but couldn’t,” Neeraj Chopra told India Today.

Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal is only the second for India in the individual category after Abhinav Bindra, who bagged the top prize in the 10m Air Rifle shooting event in China.

Neeraj dominated the javelin final just like he did in the qualification round when he threw the javelin 86.65m to qualify for the final with his first throw.

A nation of a billion-plus was awaiting a historic medal with bated breath, knowing it is well within the country’s reach — an unprecedented feeling when it comes to track and field events at the Tokyo Games.

Neeraj has allowed expectations to hit the roof. He has done it in the past and the absence of Poland’s Marcin Krukowski and the reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott and Rio Olympics silver medalist Julius Yego puts Neeraj among the favourites.

गाजियाबाद (यूपी), 7 अगस्त: कांग्रेस के जमीनी स्तर के संगठन, सेवा दल ने यहां कैंडल मार्च निकाला, जिसमें इस सप्ताह की शुरुआत में दिल्ली में कथित रूप से बलात्कार और हत्या की नौ वर्षीय दलित लड़की के लिए न्याय की मांग की गई थी। शुक्रवार रात घंटाघर तिराहे पर शहीद भगत की प्रतिमा पर बड़ी संख्या में कांग्रेस पदाधिकारियों और पदाधिकारियों सहित प्रतिभागी एकत्र हुए। उन्होंने पीड़िता की याद में दो मिनट का मौन भी रखा।

जनता दल यूनाइटेड (जेडीयू) के नवनिर्वाचित अध्यक्ष ललन सिंह ने कहा कि अगर भाजपा एनडीए के गठबंधन सहयोगी के रूप में उसे पर्याप्त सीटें नहीं देगी तो उनकी पार्टी अकेले उत्तर प्रदेश का विधानसभा चुनाव लड़ेगी।

इसके साथ ही जदयू एनडीए का दूसरा राजनीतिक दल होगा जिसने उत्तर प्रदेश में अकेले चुनाव लड़ने का फैसला किया है। इससे पहले, वीआईपी प्रमुख मुकेश साहनी ने इसकी घोषणा की और कहा कि उनकी पार्टी भाजपा के खिलाफ चुनाव लड़ेगी। साहनी ने यह भी कहा कि उत्तर प्रदेश के सीएम योगी आदित्यनाथ अपने राज्य के दौरे से डरे हुए हैं।

“हम एनडीए का हिस्सा हैं और अगर बीजेपी हमें उत्तर प्रदेश में पर्याप्त सीटें आवंटित नहीं करेगी, तो हम अकेले चुनाव लड़ेंगे। जदयू समर्थक काफी उत्साह दिखा रहे हैं।

हम जदयू को नंबर 1 के स्थान पर लाने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध हैं। हमारा उद्देश्य २०१० के बिहार विधानसभा चुनाव, २०२५ जैसे परिणाम प्राप्त करना है। पार्टी के प्रत्येक सदस्य को उनकी जिम्मेदारी मिलेगी,” ललन सिंह ने कर्पूरी सभागार में भगवान सिंह कुशवाहा का जदयू में स्वागत करते हुए कहा।

भगवान सिंह कुशवाहा शनिवार को जदयू में शामिल हो गए और उन्हें पार्टी के प्रदेश उपाध्यक्ष का पद दिया गया है।

विश्लेषकों का कहना है कि यूपी में कम आधार के साथ, जदयू और वीआईपी को भाजपा से कुछ वोट लेने की संभावना है।

इस बीच, जदयू संसदीय बोर्ड के अध्यक्ष उपेंद्र कुशवाहा ने कहा: मैं पार्टी के संगठनात्मक ढांचे को मजबूत करने के लिए बिहार के हर जिले का दौरा कर रहा हूं.

“विपक्षी दलों के नेताओं ने कहा कि मैं जदयू के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष के रूप में ललन सिंह की नियुक्ति से नाराज था लेकिन वे गलत हैं। मैं गुस्सा नहीं हूँ। मैं और ललन बाबू पुराने दोस्त हैं और लंबे समय से साथ काम कर रहे हैं। हम देश भर में जदयू का विस्तार करने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध हैं।”
