How to Switch To New Google Drive App As Backup & Sync Retires Later This Year


Google Drive is one of the most popular cloud storage platform out there. Now, Google Drive is getting a new app for Windows and macOS that will make the process of using Google’s cloud storage more streamlined on Windows and Mac desktops. The new Drive for Desktop lets users quickly access content directly from their desktop. The new app automatically syncs local filed to the cloud in the background, reducing the time taken for files to sync. Google also says that with the new app, the company’s older sync solution Backup and Sync will become defunct as it will be unified in the new Google Drive for desktop. Google says that with the new Google Drive for desktop, users can access files directly from the cloud on their Mac or PC, which frees up their disk space and saves network bandwidth.

Google says that the new Google Drive for desktop app brings people the best and most used features from both Backup and Sync, and Drive File Stream. The compay said that users can now Upload and sync photos and videos to Google Photos and/or Google Drive directly from their desktops, Sync external storage devices to the cloud, including flash drives and external hard drives, and users can also mirror Drive files on their desktop, which stores their files on the local device and enables quicker access to their content. The company said that it will being prompting users of Backup and Sync to transition to Drive for desktop, which the company says should be done by September 2021.

Google said that after September this year, users will see an in-product notification telling them that they need to transition to the new Google Drive desktop app to continue syncing their files.

The new Google Drive app can be used by all Google service users including free personal accounts to paid enterprise Google Workspace accounts. This means that Google Workspace administrators have two months to test and deploy the new app before Backup and Sync goes defunct on October 1.

While it may seem like a new discovery into the world of vaccines, it is an old technique, first demonstrated in 1866. This method of vaccination was also used during the 1960s for smallpox vaccination drives.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is expected in Lucknow finally on July 16 to launch the poll campaign of the Congress party with just six months left for the elections. This will be over one-and-a-half years after she last visited the UP capital where the Congress is hoping for a revival of its electoral fortunes.

But is it a case of too little, too late? Prashant Kishor, the poll strategist who met Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Tuesday and had first pitched as the Congress strategist then for Priyanka to be projected as the party’s chief ministerial face in 2017 elections in Uttar Pradesh, would perhaps know best.

Congress did not take Kishor’s bait then, Priyanka remained in the back-room, and the Congress offered the late Shiela Dikshit as the CM face before dropping her mid-way the campaign as it stitched an alliance with Samajwadi Party.

Priyanka was finally ‘launched’ in Uttar Pradesh right ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when after a mega road show in Lucknow with her, Rahul Gandhi said at the Congress office in Lucknow that while the party had modest expectations in UP in 2019, the real hope the party had was for the 2022 assembly elections. As it turned out, 2019 too turned into a disaster for Congress in UP as Rahul lost from Amethi, Priyanka did not contest and the only seat Congress won was Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli.

After that disaster, Priyanka did not choose to stay put in Lucknow but preferred parachute visits to the state. Like going to Sonbhadra after the killing of tribals two years ago, her last visit to Lucknow in December 2019 to meet those injured in the anti-CAA protests, her visit to Hathras last October to meet the family of a murder victim and a series of Kisan Mahapanchayats she did in West UP in February-March this year besides taking a dip in the Sangam in Prayagraj on February 11. She will now visit UP on July 16, over four months after her last visit to the state on March 7.

In political circles of Lucknow, the other leading parties hardly attach any importance to Priyanka’s upcoming visit, with one senior BJP leader in the state telling News18 that this is perhaps the third time recently that the Congress leader has rescheduled even her present trip.

The Congress party was abuzz a year ago amidst speculation that Priyanka could shift base to Lucknow till the elections. House of a former Congress leader was also prepared for her longer stay. But that did not happen as well amidst Covid.

Priyanka’s entry to Lucknow now comes at an even more precarious time for the party as it has fared disastrously in the recent Zila Panchayat Chief and Block President Polls, losing even in its only stronghold of Rae Bareli. While Congress party members in UP project her as the ‘chief ministerial face’ of the party, there is no such declaration from the leader herself and it is even not clear if she would like to send a message to the cadre by jumping into the electoral arena and contesting an MLA seat in the upcoming elections. Many political experts in UP are betting on that not happening.

In the end, it may end up a case of Priyanka’s entry in Lucknow already being too late.

After Shagufta Ali, veteran actress Savita Bajaj has sought financial help to cover her medical bills. The actress has been seen in many films like Beta Ho Toh Aisa, Nazrana, Nishant and other. She claims that she is in dire need of money as her ‘savings have dried up’ and she is suffering from major breathing issues. Talking to TOI, the actress revealed that she is surviving on what she gets from the writers’ association and CINTAA (Cine and Television Artiste’s Association).

Savita Bajaj said, “My savings have dried up. I have spent all the money on my failing health. I have developed serious breathing issues and don’t know how I will manage now.”

She added, “The writers’ association had helped me with rupees one lakh in 2016 after I was hospitalised following an accident. CINTAA, too, had helped me with `50,000. But today, I am not in a condition to work owing to my poor health. I have every intention to pay back the money once I resume work, but right now, I’m not in a condition to work due to my poor health. Sadly, I have nobody who can take care of me today. Around 25 years ago, I had decided to move back to my hometown, Delhi, but no one in my family wanted to keep me. I have earned a lot, helped those in need, but today I need help.”

Savira Bajaj is a National School of Drama (NSD) alumi and have been a part of TV shows like Kavach, Maayka and Nukkad. She also suggested that an old-age home should be made for veteran actors like her who do not have anyone and are not fit to work.

She added, “I want someone to build an old age home for actors like me who are on their own. I don’t have my own home in Mumbai even after working for so many years. I live on rent in a one room kitchen in Malad. I pay `7,000 as rent. I didn’t want to ask for money, but it’s going to be difficult for me to manage now.”

Earlier, Shagufta Ali had revealed that she is suffering financially and has even sold her car and jewellery to run her home. Soon after the team of Dance Deewane 3 gave Rs 5 lakh to the actress.

Top LeT commander among three terrorists killed in Pulwama encounter


Pulwama: Three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists including a Pakistani national, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday (July 14), the police said. 

As per the police, top LeT Commander Aijaz alias Abu Huraira was among three terrorists killed in a nocturnal encounter in Pulwama district. 

Kashmir zone police tweeted quoting Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar, “Pakistani LeT commander Aijaz @ Abu Huraira killed along with 2 local terrorists. Congratulations to Police & SFs.”

Earlier, a joint team of forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in Pulwama town after receiving specific input about the presence of some militants in the area.

During the searches, contact was established and an encounter commenced. The operation began at around 1.15 am in main chowk of Pulwama which continued for around 7 hours till morning.

Ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament from next week, Union Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba has asked all ministries to scrupulously ensure all bills passed during the session see respective subordinate legislations (rules) notified preferably within the next two months to ensure the purpose for which these laws are enacted is not defeated.

The Centre has listed 23 bills to be tabled in the Lok Sabha during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, as per a Moneycontrol report. Of these, six bills have already been introduced while 17 will be new, according to the tentative list of government legislative and financial business. The legislations to be introduced in Lok Sabha include three bills to replace existing ordinances. The 17 new bills include the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2021, among others.

Gauba has also asked for a complete review of earlier passed laws which have not seen corresponding rules/regulations being notified so far. “I would request you to immediately review all cases of pending subordinate legislations in your Ministry/Department and take necessary action for their early notification,” Gauba has written to all Secretaries on July 6.

News18 has reviewed the letter. “Further, in the context of new legislations proposed to be introduced in the forthcoming Monsoon session of Parliament on July 19, the course of action may be scrupulously followed,” Gauba has further written, requesting personal attention of all Secretaries to be accorded to this.

Among the prominent Acts passed by Parliament which are still awaiting notification of their rules (and hence the law has not been implemented so far) is the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) which was enacted in December, 2019. The Home Ministry sought yet another extension last month from a Parliamentary Committee to enact the rules regarding CAA, after the Ministry was earlier given deadlines till April 9, 2021 and subsequently till July 9.

The Cabinet Secretary said that in some cases, ministries commence the process of drafting of rules well after the enactment of the relevant law, taking an inordinately long time before finally notifying them. “Needless to say, delays in notifying subordinate rules/regulations adversely affect timely implementation of Acts and defeat the purpose for which these were legislated,” the letter says. Gauba said the process for notifying such rules/regulations should be completed at the earliest, “preferably within two months” of the enactment of the law.

The letter advises ministries and departments to formulate action plans with clear timelines to complete the exercise of notification of pending rules and monitoring to ensure Acts are fully brought into force.
