Tree Crash Leaves Teacher Immobile, Family Struggles To Pay Hospital Bills | Mumbai News – Times of India



MUMBAI: In a tragic incident, a tree which crashed on a 35-year-old woman at Dadar last week has left her immobile and her family has been struggling to meet the expenses for her medical treatment running into lakhs of rupees.
The woman, Romilda Dsouza, a teacher with Convent Girls High School, Prabhadevi, was on her way to school from her Vasai home on September 25 when a tree located opposite Visava restaurant located near Dadar station, came crashing on her.
Her younger sister, Shine Lopez, said that the accident has been “life-altering” for the family as no one would have imagined such a thing would have happened to her sister. Lopez said that on the day of the accident, her sister was accompanied by another teacher who also sustained injuries.
“My sister has been admitted to PD Hinduja National Hospital at Mahim and is suffering from C6-C7 facet fracture dislocation with spinal cord injury. She was operated upon (C6 -C7 reduction and posterior spinal fusion) on the day of the accident for the same and is presently in the ICU. Doctors say that she would not be able to walk normally and treatment process would be very long,” said Lopez.
According to a letter issued by the hospital doctor, Dsouza requires 45 days of acute rehabilitation that would cost Rs 17 lakh and further continuous rehabilitation in a rehabilitation centre and also at home for the next one year. The cost of all this could run into around Rs 25 lakh.
“We are in need of financial help… Currently, we have all pooled in whatever savings that we have had. However, it would be difficult for us to continue to bear the medical expenses to the extent that would be required for her treatment. Being a teacher, my sister did not have a very high-paying job. Also, she has a nine-year-old daughter who is dependent on her,” said Lopez.
