Millets have been consumed over centuries and were initially adopted in Asia and Africa. They are small crops which grow in semi-arid regions and utilise low quantities of water and fertilizers – which makes them an inherently climate-smart crop.

In 2023, the UN declared International Year of Millets has helped put a global spotlight of the rich nutrient profile of this ancient grain – its benefits as a source of calcium, magnesium, protein, fibre and more. They are also gluten-free.

The use of millets in Indian cooking over generations and regions reflects their adaptability to different environments and their role in providing sustenance and nutrition to diverse communities throughout history.
