Simple tips to improve Maths skills of kids – Times of India

Most of the kids dread mathematics. For some reason, numbers do not excite kids as much as stories and pictures do. Parents find it extremely difficult to make their kids love numbers. Considered one of the most difficult subjects in the current education system, mathematics puts extreme pressure on kids and demands them to excel in it.
If you are one of those parents who has tried everything but has not been successful in making their kids fall in love with maths, here are a few guidelines for you:
Tips to make life easier for single working parents

Make maths fun!

Incorporate games, puzzles, and interactive activities to make math enjoyable. Board games like “Monopoly” and “Chess” can help kids practice math concepts in a fun way. Create math challenges or puzzles for your child to solve. These can be as simple as riddles, Sudoku puzzles, or brain teasers. Show kids how math is used in everyday life. Involve them in activities like measuring ingredients for baking, calculating change while shopping, or budgeting for a family outing.

Encourage kids to count items, group objects, and identify patterns during playtime. Building with blocks or playing with Lego can teach spatial and geometric concepts.

Stories are a great way to learn maths

Read math-related storybooks that introduce mathematical concepts through storytelling. You can also tell them interesting stories of great mathematicians which might excite them to learn more about the subject. Sometimes stories of great personalities encourage children to follow their path.

Help them practice a lot

Establish a routine for daily math practice, even if it’s just for a short duration. If your kid hates maths, do not force them to study it for hours. Instead, encourage them to learn maths in shorter intervals. Ask them to take small breaks like story reading, painting or playing after every session of maths. Make sure they work on it regularly. For example, let’s say devote 2 hours to maths subject daily and allot 30 minutes for revision of what the kid had learned the previous day. Consistency can build confidence and skills over time.

Celebrate their achievements

Offer praise and positive reinforcement when your child makes progress or successfully solves math problems. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small. Be patient and supportive. Avoid showing frustration if your child struggles with a math concept. Encourage a growth mindset by emphasizing that mistakes are part of the learning process.
