Mumbai: A short circuit caused by the anti-insect UV light led to a level 2
fire in the basement of a ground-plus-one structure within the posh Benreeza Terrace on the Worli Seaface on Tuesday night.
The sea-facing building has two parts, a ground-plus-first-floor structure with basement and a ground-plus-six-storeyed building. The fire broke out in the basement of the apartment owned by Ramchand Popley, a jeweller. A fire brigade official said, “Family members and guests were having dinner when one of the family members smelled smoke and asked the servants to check. That is when they realised that a fire had broken out. Thereafter, the fire brigade was informed.” The fire broke out around 10.30pm and was doused by 12.48am.
“While nobody suffered any injuries, six building residents were rescued by our team,” said a fire brigade official. The fire was confined to furniture and decorative materials in the 4,000 square feet basement “Fire broke out probably due to a short circuit originating from anti-insect UV light.We had to break open the glasses to provide ventilation,” said assistant divisional fire officer D V Shitole.

The source of the fire was difficult to trace due to extensive smoke, leading to the fire being declared as a Level 2 fire.
Fire brigade, FSAI organise contest for mandals
The Pune fire brigade and the Fire and Security Association of India (FSAI) have organized a competition to encourage fire safety among Ganesh mandals during the Ganeshotsav festival. The competition requires mandals to provide details about their set-up, safety measures, and availability of fire extinguishers. The aim is to raise awareness about fire safety, crowd control, and the safety of visitors. Representatives will visit the mandals to verify the information and winners will receive trophies. Over 150 mandals are expected to participate in the competition.
