Shoaib Malik, a stalwart of Pakistan cricket, recently affirmed his willingness to continue playing T20 International (T20I) cricket for Pakistan. This statement came during an interview on paktv.tv following an LPL 2023 match between Jaffna Kings and Dambulla Aura on Monday, August 7.
“I have retired from Tests and ODIs. I had great stats when I was dropped, I am still available to play T20I cricket for Pakistan, but I don’t expect anything from the captain or selectors. Zero expectations, and will play till I am enjoying,” Malik said.
Despite being out of national T20I action since November 2021, Malik’s finest moments in T20 cricket cannot be forgotten, the pinnacle being the fastest fifty by a Pakistani batter in T20 World Cup match against Scotland in 2021, achieved in just 18 balls.
Malik’s cricketing journey has been illustrious yet marred by inclusion and exclusion. He announced his retirement from Test cricket back in November 2015 to concentrate on the limited-overs format. His performance in ODIs has been admirable over the years, but Malik hung his boots from the format following the 2019 World Cup held in England and Wales.
Despite his stated availability, Malik’s return to the T20I squad isn’t guaranteed. With imminent youngsters fighting for a place in the team, experienced players like Malik face stiff competition. Yet, his comment insinuates his readiness to embrace this competition and his willingness to contribute to the team, reiterating his commitment to Pakistan cricket.
Malik’s lack of expectation from the captain and selectors signals his readiness to accept any outcome, despite his unhidden desire to don the green jersey. His statement encapsulates his attitude: A blend of resilience, readiness, and absolute love for the game, evident in his intent to ‘play till he enjoys’.
As fans await Malik’s return, his enduring spirit serves as a reminder of his unwavering dedication to Pakistan cricket. Regardless of whether he steps onto the pitch again, Malik’s contributions to Pakistani cricket remain etched in history.
