MUMBAI: A 42-year-old Andheri resident was allegedly woken up from sleep and attacked and given electric shocks by her cook on Sunday afternoon.
The episode lasted an hour before the accused, Raju Singh (25), left the flat after apologising to her for his act. The victim, Bethsheebha Seth, told the police that Singh wanted to teach her a lesson for shouting at him earlier. Seth’s minor son witnessed the crime while her other son was not at home.
A traumatised Seth, who teaches at an international school in Bandra-Kurla Complex, could not bring herself to go to work on Monday.
Amboli police have launched a hunt for Singh who has gone into hiding; he lived in his brother’s home in Jogeshwari. Singh has been booked under the Indian Penal Code Section 308 for attempt to commit culpable homicide.
The crime took place in the bedroom of Seth’s 13th-floor flat in an Andheri (West) high rise between 12pm and 1pm.
Taking serious note of the crime, DCP (Zone IX) Krishnakant Upadhaya began supervising two teams from Amboli police to track down Singh who had worked as a cook at Seth’s flat for the past two years. “By the grace of God, nothing untoward happened to me and my family. I did not sleep the entire night. I did not go to school as I am still in trauma,” Seth told TOI.
“The victim was asleep in her bedroom and her son was in another room when Singh entered the flat using a spare key he had been given. Normally Singh came to cook between 6.30pm and 7.15pm. But on Sunday, he entered the flat without any intimation around noon,” said a police officer.
Seth woke up with a start and went into a state of shock on seeing Singh holding a live wire which he had plugged into a switch socket. In her complaint, Seth said, “I noticed him wearing gloves and holding the wire. He shoved the wire on my right hand and I felt electric shocks. He then asked me, ‘ab kaisa lag raha hai (now how are you feeling)?'”
Later, Singh threw the wire aside and pushed Seth who fell on the floor. “He tried to strangulate me. During the scuffle, my head banged on the floor. On hearing my screams, my son who was sleeping in another room rushed in. I asked him to go back to his room fearing Singh would attack him too. Suddenly, Singh stopped assaulting me, sat down and started apologising to me in front of my son and said, ‘maine yeh kya kiya, mujhe aisa nahi karna tha (what have I done, I should not have done this)’,” said Seth in her complaint.
Singh left Seth the flat after she “accepted” his apology. Seth called her friend Sharad Gandhi and his wife Vinitha who rushed to her flat and filed a complaint. Cops are scanning the CCTV footage of the area and the route he took to flee.
