Roger Federer says ‘new generational change is really noticeable’ in tennis: The story continues

20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has said that the new generational change is really noticeable. Novak Djokovic recently beat Daniil Medvedev in the final of US Open 2023 to win his 24th Grand Slam title.

Speaking to Eurosport, Federer said records will always tumble adding that there’s still a lot going on in tennis. Djokovic won his 24th major at Flushing Meadows to go level with Margaret Court with the most Grand Slam titles in the Open era.

“A lot still going on in tennis of course, as always. The records will always tumble. Or just the stories always rewritten. And just for example the US Open was great with the record [24 Grand Slam titles] of course by Novak Djokovic,” said Federer.

He went on to say that he’s very happy about Coco Gauff’s win at US Open 2023. Gauff beat world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka to win the first Grand Slam title of her career.

“And of course I was also very happy about Coco Gauff’s victory. I’ve known her for five years, when she was very young, and this was a great victory for her. We have a new world No.1 in women’s tennis [Sabalenka], Alcaraz, who won Wimbledon,” Federer added.

The 42-year-old said the generational change is really noticeable, insisting that it’s a shame that he did not get to play against the new generation. Federer will be in attendance for this year’s Laver Cup.

“And just the new generational change is really noticeable. It’s a bit of a shame for me that I haven’t been able to play against a few in the last couple of years. The story continues and that will always be the case. Tennis will always be played by new players but at the same time, the way I see these players moving on the court now is unbelievable,” said Federer.

With Team World leading 2-0 in the Laver Cup, the pairing of Arthur Fils and Andrey Rublev is set to take on Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe.
