Red alert stays as rains continue to pound Mumbai | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Thursday was yet another day of heavy rains with triple digit rainfall causing many low-lying areas in Mumbai and other parts of MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region) to go down under water.

IMD extended its red alert through July 27 as well for the city, as rains continued to batter many parts.

While the IMD Colaba observatory recorded close to 86 mm rainfall, Santacruz recorded 75.8 mm.

Areas of Kandivali(133 mm), Dahisar (185 mm) and Borivali-(144 mm) recorded 100 mm plus rains in the nine hours ending 6 pm on Thursday.
The C band doppler radar at Veravali which has surveillance up to 250-350 km was not functioning few a few hours on Thursday afternoon.
This isn’t the first time the doppler has been down and on June 28 too, there was a software related issue in case of the radar.
Weather enthusiast Athreya Shetty said that the offshore trough running from south Konkan coast to north Kerala coast has been very active.
“There were intense cloud bands that formed towards south Konkan which saw the Colaba observatory record over 200 mm of rains. This system gradually moved towards the North owing to which suburbs started getting heavy rains post Thursday afternoon. Such weather conditions are expected to continue for Friday as well,” said Shetty.
Abhijit Modak, an independent forecaster who runs the Konkan Weather blog, however was of the opinion that considering the break monsoon forecast for the month of August whatever rainfall the city would get till July month end should fill up the lakes as much as possible.
“Westerly winds have been very strong causing intense rainfall across the city. But as long as the rains last it must help to fill up the drinking water lakes considering that once the break monsoon phase sets in, the lake levels may not rise significantly,” said Modak.
