Mumbai: The public works department has issued a Rs 9 crore tender to rebuild, extend, construct, widen, and raise the heights of five jetties meant for smaller boats around suburban Mumbai. Two of the jetties are at Bhati Koliwada and one each at Madh Lochargaon, Madh Patwadi Koliwada, and at Kotpada in Khar Danda.
Meanwhile, nearly a week after the fatal mishap of a ferry boat on the Gateway-Elephanta sector, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) received two ‘green’ electric-powered ferry boats for its employees and people residing in the vicinity. These new boats will replace some of the rickety, decades-old wooden ones. The e-ferry boats, made from fibre reinforced polymer, will start trial runs from the first week of Jan, said officials.
The move aims at bringing not only a faster commute, almost half of the present ferry service time, but also sets an example for hundreds of other boats at the Gateway of India and Ferry Wharf to go ahead with such a replacement. Mumbai’s Rs 500 crore programme to replace wooden boats with steel-made solar-powered ones from Cochin Shipyard, with the help of funding from international banks, was stuck for nearly two years.
“The new pollution-free and environment-friendly electric ferry boat, backed by Harit Sagar or the Green Port initiative, focuses on sustainable and secured port waterways operations,” said a JNPA release. According to JNPA chairman Unmesh Wagh, the boats were manufactured by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and have been hired on lease for 10 years of operations at Rs 37 crore. The capacity of each boat is 20 to 25 passengers. These e-ferry boats will take a maximum 75 minutes to charge and will be able operate for at least three hours on a single charge.
These boats will significantly shorten the journey from the Gateway of India to Jawaharlal Nehru Port by 20 minutes, which will eventually make the total journey time 30-40 minutes, depending on weather conditions. “The number of daily trips will be decided by the port as per requirement and weather conditions, and two boats at a time shall be made available to meet the requirement of 40 passengers per schedule,” the release stated.
