Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has said the signing of midfielder Moises Caicedo will lift Chelsea into the top-four of the Premier League over Liverpool.
Writing for Sky Sports, Merson stressed that the signing of Caicedo will help Chelsea finish in the top-four this season, adding that the Blues look a hundred times better than last season. Chelsea completed the signing of the Ecuadorian midfielder for a reported British record fee of GBP 115 million from Brighton and Hove Albion.
“Chelsea already look a hundred times better than last season and with Moises Caicedo set to sign, they’ll finish in the top four instead of Liverpool,” wrote Merson.
Writing about Chelsea’s draw against Liverpool on Sunday, Merson insisted that Chelsea would have lost this match last season but would be disappointed that they didn’t win after the match. Liverpool and Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw with Luis Dias scoring for the Reds and Axel Disasi equalizing for the Blues.
“Before the Liverpool game, they would have taken a draw but afterwards, it was disappointing that they didn’t win. Chelsea would have 100 per cent lost that game last season,” Merson added.
Merson also heaped praise on Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, calling him an outstanding player. Fernandez was awarded the Player of the Match award for his dominant performance at Stamford Bridge.
“They moved the ball quicker than last season and moved it forward. Enzo Fernandez playing higher up the pitch helped him. He’s top-drawer. An outstanding player. You’ve got to get him on the ball, it’s as simple as that. There were a lot of pluses for Chelsea after the season they had last year,” wrote Merson.
After being held to a 1-1 draw against Liverpool, Chelsea are all set to lock horns with London rivals West Ham United on August 20, before taking on newly-promoted side Luton Town on August 26.
