Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has said that he doesn’t think that Tottenham Hotspurs are title contenders for the Premier League this season. Tottenham beat Liverpool 2-1 in a last-minute thriller on Saturday.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said he doesn’t think Tottenham are title contenders but have been more resilient that he would have imagined. Tottenham are placed second in the Premier League table, behind defending champions Manchester City.
“I don’t think they’re title contenders. When you see the bench coming on at the end, you know they’re not title contenders, I think they’ll be way off that. But what they are is spirited, more resilient than I imagined they would be,” said Neville.
He went on to say that Tottenham are in a good place as a club, insisting that there is a connection between the players and the manager. Tottenham signed Australian coach Ange Postecoglou at the start of the 2023/24 season.
“They’re in a good place. There’s a spirit in the stadium, on the pitch and there is a connection with the way the manager is, the players on the pitch and the people in the crowd. We’re not talking too much about the boardroom at Spurs as much as we would have been in the last few years,” Neville added.
The former England full-back said Tottenham are having a better season than he thought they would. Tottenham have picked up 17 points from seven matches, winning five and drawing two.
“There’s no doubt there’s something happening here for Spurs. It isn’t always as good as it looks and I think there will be challenges down the line, but I think they’ll have a better season than I thought they would,” said Neville.
Following their brilliant win over Liveprool, Tottenham will turn their attention towards 17th-placed Luton Town, with the two teams set to lock horns at Kenilworth Road on October 7.
