Pipeline burst in Mumbai’s Andheri West sends water soaring skyward | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: A 1,200 mm water pipeline burst in front of Twinkle apartment on Adarsh Nagar Road in Andheri West at around 3 pm on Wednesday, with water gushing out and shooting up several feet above the ground, flooding the surroundings and the road.
Such was the impact and pressure of the water that acoconut tree nearby fell and damaged a car, while four other cars parked in the vicinity inside housing societies suffered damage.
Officials and staffers of BMC’s K-West ward and the water department rushed to the spot to stem the leakage.
“Repairs are being carried out on a war footing, and we intend to complete the repairs by midnight,” said K-West ward officer Prithviraj Chauhan after the incident. Late night, he confirmed repair work was over and while water supply had been restored in Lokhandwala Complex, supply in other affected areas would be restored on Thursday morning.
“The burst happened because a patch on the pipeline, which was created when it was laid, gave way. The patch had been created for testing purposes,” said an official of the hydraulic department.
According to a BMC release, repair work was initiated immediately and supply to the pipeline was stopped. Water supply to areas such as Lokhandwala Complex, Millat Nagar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar and MHADA complex was to be affected till repair work was completed. The BMC appealed to residents of these areas to use water sparingly and carefully.
“As a result of the pipeline burst, waterlogging was witnessed on Adarsh Nagar Road and P Tandon Marg. One side of Adarsh Nagar Road was shut. People are inconvenienced and societies will have to call for tankers for 2 days. Residents will have to bear with muddy water for days. Societies had not planned for this expenditure,” said Dhaval Shah of Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens Association.
