Mumbai to bid adieu to iconic red double-decker buses on September 15; commuters urge BEST to preserve two for display at museum
Mumbai’s iconic red double-decker buses, which have been a part of the city’s public transport system since 1937, are set to be taken off the streets. The decision has sparked calls from commuter groups and bus enthusiasts to preserve at least two of these buses in a museum. The BEST administration cited high operating costs as the reason for stopping the inclusion of double-decker buses in their fleet. They have started replacing them with battery-run double-decker e-buses for tourists. Some commuters argue that the new buses lack the charm of the older ones.
