No optional practice for Shubman Gill: Rohit Sharma lauds young batter after valiant 121 vs Bangladesh

Rohit Sharma heaped praise on Shubman Gill after his valiant 121 against Bangladesh in the final Super 4s match on Friday, September 15.

Gill delivered an impressive performance against Bangladesh. Despite his commendable 121-run innings from 133 balls, India fell short of the 266-run target set by Bangladesh, losing the match by six runs. Gill’s performance was the backbone of India’s batting, and he held one end even as wickets tumbled at the other.

Gill’s century in this match was his fifth in ODIs, further cementing his reputation as a reliable batter. However, this achievement was overshadowed by another significant milestone he reached during the course of the year. In 2023, Gill crossed the 1000-run mark in ODIs, becoming the 13th Indian to achieve this feat. This accomplishment was particularly noteworthy as he achieved it in the shortest time among all Indian cricketers, reaching the mark in just 17 innings.

Throughout 2023, Gill has been a consistent performer in ODIs, scoring over 1000 runs with an average exceeding 72. His highest score in a single ODI match was an impressive 208 runs, making him the youngest batsman to score a double century in men’s ODIs. His strike rate for the year was 105.7, demonstrating his ability to score runs quickly.

Rohit, during the post-match presentation, was quick to heap praise on the young batter. As quoted by Crex, the Indian captain said that Gill knows exactly how he wants to play and is very clear in his mind as to what his contribution should be to the team.

Rohit said that Gill works hard and there is no optional practice when it comes to the 24-year-old.

“It was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows how exactly he wants to play and pace the game. Very clear in his mind and knows what he wants to do for the team. Just look at his form for the year and the past. It was been just brilliant. Solid against the new ball, works extremely hard and there are no optional practice as well.”
