MUMBAI: A sub-inspector attached to Parksite police on nakabandi duty was seriously injured when a speeding car rammed into him at Kanjurmarg (east) early Saturday. Doctors at Fortis Hospital where sub-inspector Virendra Khawle (56) is being treated said that one of the hands may have to be amputated as the wrist bone up to the shoulder is badly damaged.
Police officials said that after ramming the car into Khawle, the accused fled and the police had to chase him for 3km before he was nabbed by a patrol team near Bhandup. Parksite police have arrested the car driver, Vishal Ghorpude (34), a wholesale vegetable supplier under the IPC section of attempt to murder, rash and negligent driving. Police said they will be adding sections of drunken driving and motor vehicle act as the blood test report of the accused has confirmed presence of high level of alcohol. According to the police, the police had set up a special police nakabandi near Huma theatre at LBS Marg with 7 to 8 cops. The injured sub-inspector was among them on nakabandi duty.
Around 2 am a speeding car from the Bhandup side came at a very high speed and instead of slowing down or stopping, hit the barricades. “The police team had been flashing a torch asking him to slow down but seeing the cops, the driver of the white car did not stop and fearing that he would be caught for drunken driving, he drove over our cops. The cops had to jump to one side sub-inspector Khawle received serious injuries on his hands,” said senior inspector Vinayak Meher of Parksite police station. The police said that instead of stopping or helping the injured cop, the car driver accelerated and sped away.
The other cops immediately alerted the police control room which flashed a message to a patrolling Parksite Mobile-1 vehicle and a constable, Pradeep Kadam, followed the car on his motorcycle. The speeding car headed towards Bindu Madhav chowk at Nahur (east) at Bhandup where the police teams cornered the car and apprehended the driver. The accused told police that he was returning home after having drinks from a bar in Bhandup. The police have seized his car. The police said Khawle has been admitted to Fortis hospital and has undergone two surgeries since morning and a third one is expected to be carried out on him.
