Mumbai 28mm short of season’s average rainfall of 3,000mm | Mumbai News – Times of India



MUMBAI: The season’s total rainfall in the city is inching closer to the 3,000mm-mark. Between June 1 and September 29, the Santacruz observatory recorded 2972.1mm of rainfall, just 28mm short of the season’s average, according to India Meterological Department (IMD) data.
Meanwhile, the total water stocks in the seven catchment area lakes stood at 99.3% or 14.37 lakh million litres of the total required quantum of 14.47 lakh million litres, ending any apprehension of a shortage.
The Santacruz and Colaba weather stations recorded 51mm and 24mm rainfall on Thursday – the last of Ganpati idol immersions – as thunderstorms, coupled with spells of intense showers, lashed the city. The IMD even issued a nowcast warning around 3.30pm, prior to the onset of the thunder activity. The downpour in the suburbs was significant enough to flood Andheri subway for a brief period in the afternoon.
Although the city did not see much rain activity on Friday – the IMD Colaba observatory recorded 2.8mm rainfall and IMD Santacruz observatory 3.3mm in the 12-hour period ending 8.30pm- the IMD has forecast thunder activity, along with lightning and gusty winds, in the Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on Saturday. Weathermen said that the ongoing thunder activity is a sign of monsoon withdrawal.
After a two-week delay, the onset of the monsoon was declared over Mumbai on June 25. Since then the city has witnessed consistent rain activity and even surpassed the average June requirement of 537mm by recording 549.6mm of rain. In July, the city witnessed bumper rainfall of 1,769.8mm against the average monthly quota of 855.7mm. In fact, by July 31, Mumbai had received the season’s required average rainfall of 2,318.8mm. The IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 177mm of rainfall in August, against the average monthly quota of 566.4mm. This month, till Friday, the city has reached the average September rain quota of 359.6mm.
