Like father like son: 20 years after father Tim’s heroics vs India, Bas de Leede rocks Pakistan in World Cup 2023

Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede emulated his father Tim’s performance 20 years on in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. De Leede picked up four wickets as the Netherlands restricted Pakistan to 286 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Bas de Leede was introduced into the attack in the 16th over by skipper Scott Edwards. At this point, Pakistan had started rebuilding their innings after losing the wickets of Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq in the powerplay.

Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan went on to stitch a crucial 120-run partnership to get Pakistan back in the game. Bas de Leede tried to curb the flow of runs in his first spell and did so but without picking any wickets.

He was brought back in the attack in the 31st over after Aryan Dutt had broken the partnership in the 29th over by getting rid of Shakeel. After being hit for a boundary on the second ball of his fourth over, De Leede cleaned up Rizwan with a scramble seam delivery that went through the wicket-keeping batter’s defense. Two balls later, De Leede dismissed the hard-hitting Iftikhar Ahmed after he edged the ball to Edwards.

Following these two wickets, spin-bowling all-rounders Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz settled Pakistan’s innings with a 64-run stand and looked on course to cross the 300-run mark. However, De Leed had different ideas and produced two wickets off two deliveries, sending Shadab Khan and Hasan Ali back in the pavilion.

Bas de Leede’s performance against Pakistan rekindled memories of his father Tim’s Man of the Match performance against India in the 2003 World Cup. Tim de Leede finished with figures of 4 for 35 in 9.5 overs, dismissing Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan.

His effort helped Netherlands restrict India to just 206 runs. However, the Dutch were bowled out for 136 runs thanks to four-wicket hauls for Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble.
