MUMBAI: None of the four shootings that took place on the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express on July 31 have been captured on camera, which has led investigators to probe whether this was deliberate.

RPF constable Chetan Singh has been accused of gunning down his senior and three passengers of the same faith on the train between Vaitarna and Mira Road stations.
More than 100 witnesses that the police have traced so far have narrated accounts post the killings; there is no witness to the actual shootings.

Singh’s superior, ASI Tikaram Meena, was shot in the passage of coach B5. About half an hour later, an elderly passenger, Kadar Bhanpurwala, was shot in the other passage of coach B5. Singh then went to coach B2 where he took a passenger, Syed Saifuddin, hostage. Saifuddin was taken to the pantry car and shot while the pantry staff was asleep.
Singh then moved to coach S6, where he shot a passenger, Asghar Abbas Shaikh, and gave a communally charged speech standing next to the body. It was filmed by onlookers.
Apart from videos of the speech, the police have seized camera footage from various coaches.

Sources connected to the probe also said that Singh’s claim of a mental health condition being the motive behind the killings does not hold water.
“The killings of three passengers of the same faith and delivering a communally charged speech appear to be calculated moves. Had Singh suffered from a mental breakdown, he would have sprayed bullets indiscriminately at passengers and not selected his targets carefully,” said an officer.
Singh was the sole breadwinner of his family. Due to his dismissal from the force, his family will not receive any financial benefits. Officers said his wife and two children live in a rented property in Mathura while his mother lives separately in their hometown. The family does not own any real estate.

Singh’s lawyer, Amit Mishra, met him in prison on Thursday. He said Singh was largely unresponsive and said he did not remember anything except his name.
“He has received his letter of dismissal from the RPF. He also expressed that he wants to attend all court hearings in person and not over video-conferencing. It was explained to him that this decision would be made by prison authorities,” Mishra said.
Meanwhile, the RPF has made a demand for 250 additional Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) personnel. Currently, MSF personnel are involved in patrolling and crowd management on platforms and station areas.
