Gokhale, Delisle To Open By Diwali If No Heavy Rains | Mumbai News – Times of India
MUMBAI: Ahead of Diwali this year, the BMC is looking at opening up two crucial bridges of Mumbai namely Gokhale bridge in Andheri and Delisle bridge in Lower Parel. Officials said if there are no heavy rains, they should be able to meet the proposed deadline to open up the two crucial connectors. On Friday afternoon, the civic bridges department reviewed the ongoing Gokhale bridge work. The launching of the first girder for the bridge is expected to be done in October and second by November this year. BMC officials said that they are on track with the construction works. Additional municipal commissioner P Velrasu, who supervised the review, said that the progress was satisfactory. “All agencies are working in synchronisation. There are immediate issues of removal of some encroachments, removal of a billboard in railway premises etc. If there is not much rain we might open it as per schedule during Diwali,” he said. The unconstruction bridge, going over railway lines is proposed to have a 90m span laid over the tracks which is the second largest in the city. Residents are eagerly awaiting the opening of the bridge. “I have cut down on my visits to any place in Andheri west. Juhu beach, which I would frequent earlier, is now off my list. I do not wish to waste my time commuting as the absence of the Gokhale bridge a crucial east-west connector, means that I have to take a complete detour before reaching any place in Andheri west from the east side,” said Dinesh Mehta, resident of JB Nagar in Andheri east. Officials were also seen taking a review off Delisle bridge works in Lower Parel later on Friday. Civic officers said that the work of the bridge was affected owing to the rains. The BMC has proposed to complete three lanes by September end while other three lanes are proposed to be completed by October end. Meanwhile, PWD minister Dada Bhuse said on Friday that work on one of the two new bridges coming up on Thane Creek at Vashi in Navi Mumbai will get completed by May 2024 while the second one will be ready in September 2024.
