Four Drown During Ganpati Immersions In Palghar District | Mumbai News – Times of India



MUMBAI: Four drowning cases were reported in Palghar district on Wednesday night during Ganpati idol immersions.
In Konsai village of Wada taluka, labourers Jagat Mourya (38) and Suraj Prajapati (25), originally from Uttar Pradesh, drowned after entering a river to immerse their idol at 6.30pm. Devotees who had gathered to carry out immersions raised an alarm. A search was launched and the bodies were retrieved after an hour. In Gorhe village of Wada, Prakash Thakre (35) entered a pond to immerse his household idol and drowned.
Police said water bodies in Wada had swollen following heavy rainfall and devotees have been warned to be careful during immersions.
In Virar east’s Parole, Sanjay Patil (45), a mandap decorator, drowned when he stepped into a river to immerse an idol at 8.30 pm. Mandvi police reached the spot and immersion of other idols was discontinued. His body was retrieved after five hours. In all the cases, accidental death cases were registered by police.

The boys, aged 14, were accompanied by their fathers, but were dragged into the deeper part of the river by a water current. Despite rescue attempts, they drowned as they did not know how to swim. The bodies have been retrieved and a case has been registered. In other news, arrangements have been made in various cities for idol immersion, and the Tamil Nadu government will continue to release water from the Mettur reservoir despite Karnataka’s refusal.
Devotees throng Vaigai to immerse Vinayaka idols
Hundreds of devotees in Madurai immersed Vinayaka idols in the Vaigai river as part of the Vinayaka Chathurthi festival. Various Hindu outfits organized processions across the city, carrying idols of different sizes. The Madras High Court ruled that the sale of plaster of Paris idols cannot be prevented but their immersion in water bodies is not allowed. The court emphasized the need for eco-friendly practices. The court also rejected a plea to install idols in unauthorized places, warning against politicizing the festival. Around 2,800 police personnel have been deployed to ensure peaceful celebrations.
