Starting from pole position, Verstappen dominated the race, securing his 13th victory in 16 races this season. This win has brought him to the cusp of his third consecutive world championship title. His closest competitor, Sergio Perez, was unable to finish the race, further widening the gap between them.
The race also marked a significant achievement for Red Bull, Verstappen’s team, as they clinched the constructors’ title for the second year running. The victory at Suzuka Circuit, owned by their engine partner Honda, was particularly special. This is Red Bull’s sixth constructors’ title since their entry into the sport in 2005.
McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finished second and third respectively. For Australian rookie Piastri, this was his first time on a grand prix podium, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Verstappen now leads Perez by a staggering 177 points and could potentially secure his third drivers’ title at the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix. With five rounds remaining, Verstappen has amassed 400 points compared to Perez’s 223. Red Bull also holds an unassailable lead over Mercedes with a 318-point advantage.
Team boss Christian Horner lauded Verstappen’s performance, calling it “absolutely fantastic” and praising the team for building a “rocket ship of a car”. Verstappen reciprocated the praise, thanking the team for an “unbelievable season”.
The race was not without its share of drama. There were clashes on the track, including one between Perez and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, which led to the deployment of the safety car. Perez’s race took a turn for the worse when he collided with Haas’s Kevin Magnussen, resulting in a brief virtual safety car period. Despite these setbacks, Perez returned to the track to serve his penalty, ensuring he avoided a grid drop at the next race. His eventual retirement ended Red Bull’s 100% finishing record for the season.
