MUMBAI: An 18-year-old youth riding pillion on a bike with a friend died after the two fell off a 40-foot-high flyover in Bandra after the bike crashed into the side railing around 4am on Wednesday. The 17-year-old rider is unconscious in hospital and fighting for his life. Police claimed the duo was speeding and neither had a helmet on. Seeing a posse of cops on the bridge, the rider reportedly took a sudden U-turn only to lose control and ram the two-wheeler into the railing, throwing both onto the road below. Police were on bandobast duty on Western Express Highway, towards the sea link, to keep an eye on bikers that night-after Rang Panchami celebration and ‘Badi Raat’, an Islamic observance. Minor who fell off Bandra bridge fighting for his life Abdul Ahad Shaikh, the 18-year-old who was riding pillion with his friend, died on the spot after the two fell off a flyover in Bandra while allegedly avoiding the police early Wednesday. The underage rider has injured his head and is admitted to Bhabha Hospital. A case of accidental death has been registered at Bandra police station. The police said they would register a criminal offence against the minor who was riding without a valid licence. “The accident took place when the biker, on noticing cops, took a sudden right turn towards SV Road,” sub-inspector Shankar Patil said, adding, “The bike skidded after the rider hit the emergency brake, making him lose control.” The vehicle remained on the bridge. Senior inspector Rajesh Devare said six months ago, two people on a bike died after falling off the same spot. In that case too, the biker was trying to escape from the police and both fell off the bridge, he said. Three hours after Shaikh’s death, three others were arrested for allegedly assaulting a traffic cop who had signalled them to stop. While two —Shaikh Mohammed Naved (20) and Faizan Shaikh (20) —were on a bike, the third—Sajid Asif Ali (33)—was driving an autorickshaw. A traffic constable, Ganesh Gaddhagi (28), was on bandobast duty at the sea link towards Kala Nagar junction when he flagged them down. The three allegedly abused the constable. In his complaint, the cop said, “They hurled abuses and said they would get me sacked from the force by exposing my ‘wrongdoings’ through RTI.” Other police personnel present at the spot nabbed the three and handed them over to Bandra police station. The three have been booked for rash riding/ driving, (endangering life under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and are in police custody.
