Coronavirus | Hybrid Immunity: What is ‘hybrid immunity’? Should people who had COVID-19 still get their vaccine shot? Find out

People who have previously been infected with the SARs-COV-2 virus may develop a certain level of immunity against the deadly virus, reducing any possibilities of reinfection.

When COVID-19 infects you, your body’s immune system recognizes the virus and triggers immune responses that combat the pathogens, leading to possible inflammation, which spreads to other parts of the body. This in turn leads to the production of antibodies, which go on to build a lasting immunity.

Although there is no strong evidence to determine the duration of immunity from a natural infection, studies have indicated that naturally-acquired immunity may be long-lasting. As per a study conducted by researchers from Rockefeller University and Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, it was found that immunity among people who got COVID-19 lasted for six months to a year. Additionally, the study suggested that the same people showcased a more robust immunity post-vaccination.
