Police seek CCTV footage of student’s javelin deat
Raigad schoolboy Hujefa Daware was killed by a javelin thrown by a fellow student while they were training for a taluka-level competition on Wednesday.
Atul Zende, additional SP, Raigad, said, “We have sought the CCTV footage of the school playground to ascertain how the fatal incident occurred. During the probe, we learned that the boy was practising when he was hit on his temple near his left eye and he collapsed on the spot. He was rushed to Goregaon civic hospital (in Raigad), where the doctors declared him brought dead.”
The complainant, Bandu Pawar, a physical training (PT) teacher hailing from Sangli, said taluka-level outdoor sports competition were being conducted at the school playground and he was assigned the umpire’s job for the volleyball competition when there was chaos as news spread that a boy had been hit by a javelin during a practice session.
“I rushed to the spot and found that the student, Hujefa Daware, had sustained a grievous injury to his temple. The students, it appears, had not taken permission from the school management to practice javelin throw,” he alleged.
Zende said, “Prima facie, we have registered an accidental death case under Section 147 of the Criminal Procedure Code to ascertain if the boy had died under circumstances raising a reasonable suspicion.”
The police have obtained the CCTV camera footage of the school playground where the students were practising for the outdoor games competition, to ascertain whether there was any foul play.
Zende said after they zero in on the student who had thrown the javelin towards Daware which hit his temple near the left eye and caused him grievous injury, they would interrogate him in the presence of his parents to ascertain whether there was any foul play involved.
When contacted, Somnath Gharge, Raigad SP, said, “As prima facie an accidental death case has been registered, I won’t be able to comment. The matter is being probed.”
