The elections will be held in Madhya Pradesh on Nov 17, Chhattisgarh on Nov 7 and 17, Rajasthan on Nov 23, Telangana on Nov 30, and Mizoram on Nov 7

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced the assembly polls in five states– Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram.

The assembly elections will be held in Madhya Pradesh on November 17, Chhattisgarh on November 7 and 17, Rajasthan on November 23, Telangana on November 30, and Mizoram on November 7. The results of all the five states will be declared on December 3.

The terms of the legislative assemblies in Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh are set to conclude on various dates in January 2024, while the term of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly will end on December 17 this year.

Here is all you need to know about the five poll-bound states and how the parties fared in the 2018 assembly elections:

Who is Ruling Where?

The Congress is in power in two of the five states – Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while the BJP is ruling in Madhya Pradesh.

In Telangana, the KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samiti is in power while in Mizoram, the Mizo National Front (MNF) is in power.

Which States Will Have Single Phase Polling?

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, and Telangana will go for polling in a single phase, like the last time in 2018. In Chhattisgarh, the polling will be held in two phases (November 7 and 17), like in the 2018 assembly election. Polling will be held in 679 seats in total across the five-poll bound states.

Rajasthan

In the 2018 assembly elections, polling was held in a single phase on December 7 and the results were announced on December 11. Congress Party under the leadership of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot formed the government after defeating the BJP in the state.

The state has 200 assembly seats but the polls were held in 199 seats as the election for the Ramgarh seat in Alwar was cancelled due to the death of BSP candidate.

Madhya Pradesh

The Madhya Pradesh assembly elections 2018 were conducted on November 28 and the results were announced on December 11. The Congress ended up being the single largest party with 114 seats, two short of a majority in the 230-member assembly.

Chhattisgarh

The Chhattisgarh assembly election 2018 was held in two phases on November 12 and 20. The results were announced with the assembly election results on December 11. The Congress won the election in a landslide victory giving a severe blow to the BJP, where the party was in power for the past 15 years.

Telangana

The Telangana state assembly elections 2018 was conducted in a single phase on December 7 and the results were declared with other poll-bound states on December 11. K Chandrashekar Rao and his Telangana Rashtra Samithi (now Bharat Rashtra Samithi) swept the polls in the state by winning 88 seats out of 119.

The Mizoram assembly election 2018 will be held on November 28 and the results were announced on December 11. Mizo National Front (MNF) got a majority in 40-member Mizoram assembly by winning 26 seats.
