Asian Games 2023, Rowing: India finishes with bronze in quadruple sculls, disappointment in women’s eight

India ended the rowing events with 5 medals as they claimed bronze in the men’s quadruple sculls event on Monday. The women’s eight team had to face disappointment as they finished last in the event.

In the quadruple sculls, the Indian team of Satnam Singh, Parminder Singh, Jakar Khan and Sukhmeet Singh didn’t have the best of starts as they were fourth by the 500m mark. They would amp the intensity over the rest of the event and edge past Indonesia to claim the final medal spot.

They would slowly extend their advantage over the Indonesian side after the 1500m mark and ended with a time of 6:08.61, 5.96 seconds behind China, who claimed the gold medal.

The women’s eight team had a day to forget as they finished last in the event. The team struggled to find rhythm and quickly fell behind the pack and failed to recover from it. India finished with a time of 7:05.71, 32.1 seconds behind China, who got the gold medal.

Earlier in the day, India had got their fourth medal in rowing as the men’s four team of Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Puneet and Ashish have claimed bronze in the men’s four event.

This comes after India’s fantastic performance in rowing on Sunday, as they claimed two silvers and one bronze.

The men’s eight rowing team, with Neeraj at the bow position, won a silver medal after finishing the race with a time of 5:43.01, just 2.84 seconds behind the gold medallists, China.

In addition to this, the Indian men’s lightweight double sculls team, comprising Olympians Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh, also bagged a silver medal. They finished the race with a timing of 6:28.18, trailing the gold medallists, China, by 5.02 seconds. This was India’s second successive medal in men’s lightweight double sculls at the Asian Games, following a bronze win at Jakarta 2018.

The men’s pair of Babu Lal Yadav and Lekh Ram added to India’s medal tally by securing a bronze medal. They completed their race in 6:50.41, behind Uzbekistan, who took silver, and China who clinched the gold.
