A post shared by leaker Majin Bu (spotted by AppleInsider) on social media platform X claims that the upcoming third-gen Apple Pencil may use interchangeable tips. The post also notes that Apple Pencil 3 will come with different magnetic tips that can be used for various purposes.
To compare, the first and second generations of Apple Pencil also use an interchangeable nib that can be replaced as they wear over time. Some third-party providers also offer tip replacements for the Apple stylus. These tips can also alter the way the Apple Pencil works on the iPad display.
Apple Pencil 3: What to expect
As per Bu, the upcoming stylus from the iPhone-maker may also allow users to adjust how their Apple Pencil works. The X post shared by the leaker also claims that the Apple Pencil 3 will ship “with interchangeable magnetic tips.”
The post also suggests that the changeable tips are intended to make the Apple Pencil work better “for drawing, technical drawing, and painting.” Apart from this, the post also includes images of tips in three different sizes and thicknesses. The report also notes that Apple may use differing materials to produce these tips.
Currently, Apple Pencil models rely on a friction fit system for changing tips. The upcoming Apple Pencil 3 is likely to use magnets to make it easier for users to switch between tips.
Earlier, Apple has published patents and applications that support the upcoming change. One of these patents shows how the functionality of the stylus can change to match the nib. This also means that the nibs may include built-in sensors and various capabilities. This includes measuring the colour of a substance it touches.
