Activists urge NMMC to take action against illegal parking fees | Navi Mumbai News – Times of India

NAVI MUMBAI: Concerned citizens and activists have recently brought to light a series of irregularities within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation‘s (NMMC) pay-n-park initiative, as well as the presence of unauthorized stalls obstructing sidewalks and peddling various items.

These observations have raised serious questions about the proper implementation of parking regulations.
In some instances, certain locations that prominently display “Free Parking” signs have become grounds for unauthorized individuals to collect parking fees, despite lacking proper authorization from civic authorities. Acknowledging the gravity of these concerns, civic officials have launched investigations into these alarming practices.

The now defunct CentreOne mall in Vashi has not escaped scrutiny. Adjacent to the building, a conspicuous “Cidco Free Parking” sign is marred by the presence of civic goods, leading drivers to park outside the designated area. Shockingly, an individual has taken it upon themselves to charge parking fees at this location without any official endorsement of NMMC’s “pay-n-park” regulations. Renowned RTI activist Anarjit Chauhan characterized this behavior as audacious extortion, potentially involving collusion between agents and civic authorities.
Rohitt Malhotra, an activist affiliated with the BJP, raised a flag near Vashi railway station, specifically mentioning an exorbitant parking fee of Rs 30 for just 30 minutes of parking near the Kalyan Jewellers store. This exploitative practice has reportedly been known to NMMC officials, yet despite filing formal complaints with the municipality, no tangible actions have been taken to rectify the situation. This has led some to speculate that local political interference might be at play.
Activists are urging NMMC to take immediate and decisive action by filing First Information Reports (FIRs) against these unlawful practices. The aim is to put an end to these predatory behaviors that unfairly target unsuspecting individuals.
Anarjit Chauhan further implored NMMC to escalate the matter by lodging a police complaint against unauthorized tin sheds that are obstructing pedestrian pathways on sidewalks. He specifically highlighted four such obstructions near Nerul railway station (east). Unfortunately, the response from civic officials to remove these impediments or initiate FIRs has been lethargic, exacerbating an already unfortunate situation.
Somnath Potre, deputy municipal commissioner for Zone 1 within NMMC, has affirmed his commitment to addressing these violations. He intends to direct his staff to take appropriate actions in response to the activist’s formal complaint.
Dilip Nerkar, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Estate), has indicated that he will instruct his officials to conduct on-site visits to specific pay-n-park locations flagged for unauthorized fees or wrongful charges, especially in cases where parking should be provided free of charge. This proactive approach demonstrates an intention to rectify these issues and restore proper order within Navi Mumbai’s parking infrastructure.
