Rather get bowled out early than stutter to a safe score: Sam Curran on England’s mantra in World Cup

England all-rounder Sam Curran has spoken about England’s approach to ODI cricket ahead of the World Cup, set to start on October 5. England come into the tournament as the defending champions from the previous edition of the tournament, where they defeated New Zealand in the final.

England have been playing a high-intensity approach over the last 4 years, which has helped them register the highest ODI total in the history of cricket – 498 runs against Netherlands in 2022. Speaking to GQ, England all-rounder Sam Curran has said that they rather get all out early, rather than stuttering to a safe score.

“Jos wants our team to attack with flair – he’d rather get bowled out for a lower score, showing positive intent, than meander our way to a safe score. He always wants to be breaking boundaries, pushing teams and putting them under a lot of pressure. Naturally, people want to see fours, sixes and wickets,” Curran told GQ magazine.

“You see the way England are playing Test cricket now with Ben Stokes coming in (as captain). They want players to attack, attack, attack. No team has really done that before and they’ve caught others off guard, so it’s about breaking the traditions in a way to keep the game moving forward,” he further added.

The most expensive cricketer in the history of the Indian Premier League, Curran has praised India for their cricketing culture and has said that he loves playing in the country.

“Cricket’s a religion [in India] so you’ve got to go with an open mind, take it all in and expect an amazing experience. For one of my good mates, Gus Atkinson, it’s his first time going to India, so he’s been asking questions about the conditions, the culture, the people, the fans. People just love the game and when you leave the hotel, you get mobbed by loads of fans, which is amazing. It just shows how much people love and worship cricket in India,” Curran concluded.
