Asia Cup 2023: There’s nothing wrong with Shubman Gill’s technique, says Harbhajan Singh

Former India spin-bowler Harbhajan Singh has rallied behind India opening batter Shubman Gill, saying there is nothing wrong with his technique. India’s Asia Cup 2023 opener against Pakistan ended in a no-result as rain forced the match to be abandoned.

Asia Cup 2023: Points Table

Speaking exclusively to India Today’s Nikhil Naz, Harbhajan said Gill needs a bit of rest because he has been playing a lot of cricket recently. Gill scored 10 runs off 32 deliveries in India’s Asia Cup opener against Pakistan.

“I think this is because of too much cricket. He has been playing for quite a while now. He had a great IPL. Every player needs some rest because IPL is a very demanding tournament. You go to travel and also play every second day. I feel he just needs a bit of break. He’s a quality player and that there’s no doubt about that,” said Harbhajan.

He went on to say that there is nothing wrong with Gill’s technique, insisting that he will come good once his confidence is back up. Gill finished as the leading run-scorer in IPL 2023 but his form has since dipped.

“He will come back to form and start scoring runs. I believe there’s nothing wrong with his technique and they way he’s batting. But it’s just that his confidence is a bit low and I’m sure if he gives himself a bit more time, he’s going to come good,” Harbhajan added.

India’s batting unit was put to the test by Pakistan on Saturday with their top-four batters failing to put up big scores. India captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer failed to fire against Pakistan as the Men in Blue were rescued by impressive batting performances from wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan and vice-captain Hardik Pandya.

India will now turn their attention towards Nepal, with the two sides set to clash in international cricket for the very first time at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
