India’s rising javelin thrower, Kishore Jena, recently made a mark at the World Athletics Championships 2023 held in Budapest, Hungary. Despite it being his debut at the global event, Jena showcased an impressive performance, finishing fifth in the men’s javelin final with a personal best throw of 84.77m.
Jena’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as he became the first athlete from Odisha to compete in a final event at the prestigious World Athletics Championships. His performance not only brought immense pride to his home state but also set a new benchmark for Indian athletes in the sport.
In a recent interaction with ANI, Jena shared his future goals and aspirations.
“My goal is to do something for the country and take Odisha forward,” he said.
“The World Championships was uncharted territory for me and I didn’t feel any pressure of expectations. However, the experience I gathered at the event will help me in the Asian Games. I am just thinking about Asian games and I want to perform well there,” he further added.
Jena also expressed his admiration for fellow javelin thrower and Olympic champion, Neeraj Chopra.
“Neeraj Chopra is a great human being and as a player he is amazing. Everyone respects him as a player. During the game, we chatted with each other about what to do and what are the problems. He keeps telling and supporting too. For me and the entire country, it was a matter of pride that we won World Championship gold in Javelin,” Jena added.
He further revealed that Chopra’s motivational words inspired him to perform at his very best during the World Championships.
Jena credited Chopra for his role in boosting the popularity of the sport in India.
“Ever since Neeraj bhai won the Olympic gold medal the sport has become famous and hope it continues,” he added.
As Jena sets his sights on the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, which is set to begin on September 23, he carries with him the hopes and expectations of a nation.
