MUMBAI: After a month’s search for diamond ornaments worth Rs 55 lakh stolen from a Peddar Road businessman’s flat, Gamdevi police have recovered ornaments worth Rs 40 lakh from the adaptor of a deejay’s sound system. One accused, Bhagwan Mukhia (25), who worked for a DJ in Bihar, was arrested and brought to Mumbai recently.
He spilled the beans on the involvement of Lalu Mukhia (40), a sweeper at a building on Peddar Road . Lalu was also arrested and has admitted he sold the remaining ornaments worth Rs 15 lakhin Lucknow. Lalu had got this jewellery from the main accused, Mohan Mukhia. Police have recovered this jewellery too. Mohan (25), who worked at the complainant’s flat, is on the run. Mohan and Bhagwan Mukhia are cousins.
The complainant, a businessman, had lodged a complaint on August 3 about a diamond bracelet and earrings all valued at Rs 55 lakh being stolen from his flat.
“During the probe, we questioned all six domestic helpers at the flat. We learnt that Mohan, who worked for six to seven months, had recently quit. We began collecting information about him,” said API Dhanesh Satardekar.
From Mohan’s call data records, the police traced his location to Punjab. A team went there and on gathering information reached a farm where Mohan’s mother was a labourer. She told the police Mohan had come to meet her but left soon after. The police collected more details of his friends and relatives and learnt about Bhagwan.
The police team went to Bihar and grilled Bhagwan who admitted Mohan had given him stolen ornaments. He confessed he had hidden the ornaments in an adaptor connected to the sound system deejays use. He was arrested. “We opened the system with a screwdriver and recovered the stolen ornaments,” said an officer.
During questioning, he admitted about Lalu’s role. He had sold the jewellery in Lucknow for Rs 5lakh and gave Rs 4 lakhto Mohan and kept Rs 1 lakh.
