40-year-old brandishes sword, threatens NMMT bus driver in Vashi, booked | Navi Mumbai News – Times of India

NAVI MUMBAI: Police booked a 40-year-old man for brandishing a sword and threatening an NMMT bus driver after his Maruti Suzuki car hit the bus in Vashi on Monday night.
The accused identified as Sunny Lamba, a Kalamboli resident, also hurled expletives and striked the sword several times on the door of bus driver’s cabin. The incident has become viral on social media.
Acting on a complaint lodged by bus driver Suryakant Suryawanshi (29), a Ghansoli resident, who is employed on contract basis with NMMT undertaking, police booked Lamba under section 4, 25 of Arms Act, 1959 along with section 279 of the IPC for rash driving or riding on a public way and section 135 and 37(1) of Maharashtra Police Act, 1951.
Shashikant Chandekar, senior inspector of Vashi, said that the complainant has stated in the FIR that on Monday, he was ferrying passengers from Uran to Koparkhairne. At around 10.15pm, when the bus reached Vashi sector 10 near Waman Hari Pethe jewellery store, there was heavy traffic as vehicles were parked on left side of the road. Also due to hawkers on the pavement and near the NMMT bus stop, there was huge crowd of customers. The bus driver was compelled to halt the bus in the middle of the road for the passengers to alight and even the passengers waiting at the bus stop boarded the bus. As the bus driver drove the vehicle, he suddenly applied brakes as pedestrians hurriedly crossed the road and that’s when Lamba’s car dashed into the rear end of the bus.”
Chandekar added, “Due to the collision, the left side of car’s bumper and bonnet got dented and the headlight broke down. Hence, Lamba got infuriated and alighted from his car and went near the cabin of the bus driver and started abusing him. Lamba attempted to open his cabin door, but it was jammed. Hence, Lamba climbed the step near the cabin and inserting his hand through the open window pane, he caught hold of Suryawanshi’s collar and attempted to drag him down the bus. As Suryawanshi did not leave his seat, Lamba went to his car and returned with a sword and striked multiple times on the driver’s closed cabin door and yelled at him by challenging him to come down. He also alleged that it was Suryawanshi’s fault that caused damage to his car.
He further said, “Though the crowd attempted to pacify Lamba, he was reluctant and continued to threaten Suryawanshi. After Vashi police station received a call about the incident, our cops went to the spot, streamlined the traffic movement and brought both Lamba and Suryawanshi to police station. Thereafter, they were taken to NMMC hospital in Vashi where their medical tests were done. Subsequently, an offence was registered against Lamba.”
Chandekar further added that the accused Lamba has not been arrested as per the provisions of the laws as the sections invoked against him attracts a punishment of less than seven years. Hence, he has been served with a notice under code of criminal procedure directing him to co-operate in police investigation.
